Chapter 250: Louis’ voice.

Leilani.

A couple of days has passed since the whole incident at Gavin’s and Maya’s engagement party and for some reason, I still haven’t been able to shake off that dread I had felt creeping up on me.

I couldn’t help but feel like there was someone watching me every now and then either, and even though I knew that Louis and Clement had been put in jail for complicity and sexual misconduct respectively, and that they couldn’t haunt me from wherever they were, I still felt very bothered.

My mind for absolutely no reason wasn’t at peace and to top it all, Micah’s strange behavior at the end of the party still rubbed off on me the wrong way.

I chewed on my bottom lip as I stared into the tea cup in front of me, my mind a tornado of conflicting thoughts as I sighed and said; "Do you feel it too?"

Jarek, who had been busy checking through some files— which was the only thing he’s been doing for the past two days— slowly lifted his head to meet my gaze. And as usual, his eyes were soft as he asked me;

"What am I supposed to feel?"

"The shift in the air... the feeling like someone’s watching you."

"You think someone’s watching me?" He asked sternly then shook his head as if realising something, his voice gruff as he added; "No wait... you think someone’s watching you?"

"That’s right, your royal slothship!" I hissed under my breath, referring to how slow he’d been to understand what I was implying. But when he cocked his eyebrows at me and frowned, I immediately turned away with burning cheeks.

I croaked out; "Yes."

"Why? How?"

"What do you mean how?" I answered with an eyeroll.

Ladies and gentlemen, did I ever tell you guys that ever since Jarek returned from wherever it was that he went, he’s been acting strangely?

Cold even?

If I haven’t, then this is the perfect opportunity to point that out! He watched me for a moment like he has never seen me in his entire life, his eyes trailing from my head to my fur boots for a moment too long before he sighed, closed the folder in front of him and drawled;

"I want to know what gives you the impression that you’re being watched!"

"Nothing... it’s like a feeling." I explained softly, "wherever I go, I feel like there are invisible eyes watching me but I never see any one."

He went silent as soon as I said that, seemingly deep in thoughts. But what he said next shattered that illusion. He muttered; "Or maybe it’s your mind playing tricks on you."

My face fell and I frowned. "What do you mean?"

"I mean that your brain could be making that up. That you may still feel stressed after everything, coupled with being forced to lead my company in my absen—"

That was the last thing I heard before something in me snapped. It was the last thing I could wrap my head around before I could no longer stand him.

My anger peaked as I shut off my tablet and dropped it onto his table, my voice icy as I stated. "You don’t have to make it seem like I am making it up."

"But you may be making it up!" He argued, irritating me even further.

Goddess, was his head smashed during his treatment?

Was he exposed to infrared radiation? Or some zombie virus?

Pushing these thoughts away, I snapped; "But I am not—"

"I don’t know. I don’t know how you expect me to believe that there are people watching you when Chalice and her cohorts have literally been locked behind bars!"

"I just feel it, okay?!" I yelled, rising to my feet and sending the popcorn bowl on the table flying forward.

And do you know what was more annoying than having him not understand a word I say?

The fact that he caught the popcorn bowl so effortlessly, stopping the mess that would’ve created without breaking a sweat!

After he’d caught the bowl and turned to me, I turned away. Why? Because I didn’t want to see him. Because I didn’t wish to talk to him about it anymore!

I waved him off and picked up my purse, my eyes darting to the wall clock not so far from his chair as I said; "It’s lunch break now and I’d like to step out for some food and air."

"But the building has a cafeteria..." he answered mechanically, sounding like some broken robot— which was unlike him. But deciding that I didn’t want to push this further, especially now, I shook my head and sighed;

"I need to take a walk as well. I’ll see you after lunch break."

I didn’t wait for him to respond. I didn’t even turn to spare him another glance as I walked out of the office with my phone in hand and a heavy feeling settling in my chest.
