Zevran.
I had thought she was dying. I thought that she was in a kind of not-so-easily-escape-able- danger so imagine my surprise when I rushed into her house to find her sprawled on the floor, shaking wildly while her brother held onto her as if for dear life.
My heart fell in my chest when I took in her overall state— her flushed face, her terribly quaking body, the way tears kept streaming down her face and the way she screamed out in agony, wailing as though her life was being held on by a single thread.
However, it wasn’t her cries that stuck out the most to me. It was her smell.
It was the excruciatingly sweet and tantalizing scent that floated in the air, meddling with my senses. It was the way it reacted with my body, the way it made my entire senses go erect and made my cock stir even when I knew it shouldn’t.
My wolf howled out in want— an extreme kind of want which it had never felt before for anyone, even her, and I squeezed my eyes shut, hoping to dispel these thoughts and feelings...
But man, I was failing. Terribly.
I closed my eyes again and dragged in a lungful of air, hoping to calm my raging heart that way. But do you know what happened instead?
I dragged in a lungful of her intoxicating smell instead. The smell of her heat. Of her body seeking relief.
Usually, that smell from any woman was enough to drive any man mad; so imagine the madness I was fighting now that the smell was coming from my mate?
My own mate! My Leilani!
"What is happening to her?" Caelum’s voice was what snapped me out of my thoughts, and it wasn’t until I looked up to meet his gaze that I remembered he was here... that he had followed me over upon hearing that she may be in danger.
His face was scrunched up into a deep frown and I couldn’t help but notice the way he chewed on his bottom lip, just the way he did whenever he was confused or worried.
When I watched him, for a moment too long if I must say the truth, I realized then that his eyes flashed with something dark. Something that looked too much like desire before it settled slowly and he took a tantalizing step forward.
But I didn’t miss the way he tried so hard not to go near her. The way his face was flushed. The way he couldn’t look at her like a virgin new to things like this— but we both knew that he was no virgin. And that he wasn’t new to these things.
He sighed. "Is she okay? What happened?"
"She took a substance. I don’t know what it is but I fear it is poison!" Gavin responded, sounding like he was about to cry.
My frown deepened when I took in the look on his face and when it finally dawned on me that he really doesn’t know what was happening to his sister, I would’ve laughed. Goddess, I would’ve really laughed if I wasn’t in such a turmoil myself.
I seethed; "These are not the symptoms of poison."
"But it is! Someone anonymous had sent her a package earlier today which contained some substance. It also contained a note stating that it was the antidote for the Moonveil draught... and she took it!"
"And?"
"And she’s been like this since she took it. Only that her symptoms seem to worsen by the minute!" He cried, wiping off the tears on his face with the back of his sleeves.
It was surprising to see him like this. So afraid. So worried about Leilani, but reminding myself that that ought to be a topic for another day, I hissed; "It is not poison! Or let me say that the symptoms she is experiencing isn’t that of a person who’s ingested poison!"
"Then what is it?" He cried out, sounding desperate.
"Her heat!" Caelum and I responded simultaneously, then stopped to cast a weird look at each other before turning back to him.
"Your sister is in heat," I continued, "What should we do?"
