Zevran.
For the longest time, I was too angry to properly make sense of what she had just said to us, too pissed off beyond reasoning to realize that she’d just mentioned Chalice being in labor as we speak.
My body vibrated with rage and irritation and I spat before I could stop myself; "What do you owe Chalice?"
But she didn’t respond. She didn’t even look at me.
"I just spoke to you. What do you owe Lady Chalice Blackthorne?!" I barked and when she still wouldn’t respond, Darius clapped his hands together and I gasped when a high pitched scream tore out from the back of her throat almost instantaneously.
Fluid slipped out from the corners of her eyes, but they were not clear liquid like tears. They were blood red, thick and ran down so slowly down her face that my first response to it was shock.
I took a step back, my mouth falling slightly open. My eyes desperately shot to Darius’ face but he wasn’t looking at me or anyone at that. However, he didn’t need to because his entire attention was on Miranda and his eyes were cruel— too cruel.
They looked like two swirling dark orbs swallowing people’s souls... and him... he looked like he was taking pleasure in hurting her so badly. Like he was having the time of his life rather than killing someone with just flicks of his wrist.
"Speak, Miranda!" He growled so low, sending jolts of electricity running up my back.
"No!" She cried, convulsing, "I cannot!"
"And you will die!" I clapped back, frowning when she smiled brightly at me. The sight of her bloody teeth and tear streaked face made me somewhat uncomfortable and I looked away, hissing under my breath; "This is a death sentence."
And my ladies and beautiful gentlemen... Do you want to know what her response to that statement was?
Amusement.
Pure amusement.
"I cannot die...!" She laughed, throwing her head back when another ear-splitting groan slipped past her bloody lips, "...you cannot kill me. Not when you know that no one else has the ability to lift that spell off Ms Sinclair. If I die, the soul swap would continue and she would bear all the pain her twin is meant to endure, even childbirth."
Her words made a shiver run up my spine and I stepped back subconsciously, hating myself for letting her words get to me so badly.
And that was when it hit me.
That was when I realized that her statement earlier had not been bluff.
Chalice was indeed in the middle of childbirth and if anything is not done about it, Leilani would be the one suffering through the pain... that plus, the torture she’s already enduring.
My mouth hung open as my forehead creased in worry; And she probably noticed the unease on my face because then, her smile widened. But just as she tried to speak, Darius cut in, his voice sharp and crisp... and dripping with disdain.
He hissed; "You’re wrong."
She froze. "You’re wrong because right now, Chalice is going through that pain all by herself. I am in your head. I have seen what your so-called magical composition is made up of and I have the power to lift Leilani’s curse..."
"I don’t believe you!" She cried desperately, "...you’re not a witch but a curse! An abomination! You do not possess such strengths."
And as soon as she said those words, I mentally facepalmed myself. I half expected Darius to get mad. To be riled up by her choice of words; But to my utmost surprise, he didn’t even seem fazed. He simply smiled, shrugged nonchalantly and drawled in that rich baritone I’ve come to abhor;
"You are rightly... stupid. I do not understand why some of you keep making the mistake of thinking that I am a hybrid. I am NOT the hybrid. I am only a Lycan and a dark knight, so spare your praises, and keep them for the girl who you’ve for some reason gotten on her bad side."
