Caelum.
My heart raced as I ran through the cold damp stinky halls of the dungeons, and as I ran, there was only one thing— person— I had in mind.
Leilani.
Her safety was the only thing I worried about and the things she might do to Keisha was another thing I didn’t. Couldn’t. Bring myself to think about.
I knew that she was insanely mad at Keisha. Hell, it was the reason we had decided to keep Keisha’s whereabouts as a secret to her for so long. But for some strange reason today, she found out.
From who?
I had no idea.
And frankly, I didn’t want to think about it at all.
I lost my mind when I noticed from a distance that she was being cornered by some of the watchmen and while one had both of her hands pinned behind her back, the others were shouting out insults and questions at her.
I saw red when one of them leaned close to her— and in my books, he was too close— because I saw the way she flinched. I saw the disgust in her face as his breath fanned her skin, and I saw how she went from genuinely confused to utterly terrified.
I snapped.
I had kicked three out of them to the floor before I even knew what I was doing, and how did I snap out of it, you may ask, well, let’s just say that Leilani’s voice pulled me out of it.
Her cries of terror had somehow slipped into my haze of madness, pulling me out of whatever dreamlike state I had been lost in.
I glanced up at her with a mixture of worry and sadness clawing at my heart, and then I muttered; "Open your eyes, Leilani. You don’t have to tell me anything."
At the sound of my voice, Leilani looked up, a look of complete confusion on her face. She looked at me like I was some Messiah of some sort, and I swear to the goddess, that made me feel inexplicably good.
"Caelum?" She asked softly, while I could only beam a smile at her in hopes that that would make her feel better.
And it did.
I could visibly see that it did.
I smirked. "Hello, beautiful."
I had half expected her to roll her eyes at me upon hearing me call her that, so when she decided to jump into my arms instead, pulling me into a crushing hug and burying her face into my chest, my breath hitched in my chest.
I held her like I have never been held by a woman before— desperately and almost greedily. And when I realized that her shoulders were shaking violently, which automatically meant that she was crying silently, my chest tightened.
"Hey hey, sweetheart, it’s alright. It is alright, I promise you. I am sorry you had to go through that." I whispered softly, while combing through her hair with my fingers.

Don’t worry, it didn’t.
