Leilani.
I didn’t realize that I had said those words out loud until I felt all four pairs of eyes on me; but I didn’t take back my words.
In fact, I didn’t want to.
So I said again. "I know it is Darius. That must be where he came into the picture."
To my utter surprise, Father didn’t debunk that new piece of information. If anything, he only nodded solemnly, and in that moment, I didn’t miss the look of utter sadness in his eyes.
The look disappeared just as fast as it came. He drawled; "That and when I was shot with the poison they shot me with in order to weaken me."
"What do you mean?" I asked quietly, noticing the way he watched me for a second before slowly lowering his head as if to hide from me. For a man his size, his voice was strangely too small— barely above a whisper when he said;
"It was a poison only known to us. One that is used to take down any Lycan, no matter how powerful they are. It is kept a secret from werewolves because... you know... they can easily attack us with it if they find out about it..." he said, and this time, he made it a point to fix a dark glare at all three brothers who all— as per usual— shrunk away from him.
"...It was not in circulation, and at the time, the only pack with a minimal supply of it was mine."
"So you immediately knew that it was given to them by one of your own..?" I finished, my voice cracking due to the amount of emotions that had now risen in my throat.
"Yes." His answer was quiet but it held more weight than anything we’ve said here today.
Okay, not more weight than when I found out that he is my biological father.
A beat of silence passed between us before he slowly rose to his feet, and for the first time since... well, since I’ve come to know him... he seemed small. Powerless. Laden with the burden of his past mistakes... filled with regrets he could not even voice out loud.
I wanted to wrap my arms around his neck and pull him into a tight hug, but I wondered if that would make me appear too forward. Too needy. I wondered if that would mean I had forgiven him for not trying harder to get me out of that hellish pack, especially since I was never in a good spot with Malakai to begin with.
He drawled; "I have proof that Darius was in on the plan with them..."
But I didn’t respond. I didn’t know how to. I do not know why, but suddenly, my legs felt too weak to continue to carry my weight. My breath even came out in short bursts of rasps. I stumbled, almost falling, but before I could, strong arms wrapped around my midriff, holding me upright. And I gasped when I realized that it was Kael.
However, I didn’t feel the burst of sparks I would have felt whenever our skins touched. I didn’t feel the need to jump his bones like I have been feeling ever since the trip either because all of my heart, my mind and even my body was being pulled towards the man in front of me...
My father.
Of his sufferings.
