Darius.
I searched Leilani’s face for any trace of unease, anxiety or anything that could give away the fact that she was lying to me but I found none.
Instead, what I was met with was a sincerity that was so immense, it made my heart constrict within my chest.
I cupped her face in my hands, half expecting her to shrug me off like she always does, but for some reason, she didn’t. Instead, she leaned into my touch, closed her eyes as if in delight and sighed heavily— a sigh that felt like she was unraveling all of her burdens before me.
And that delighted me.
At that moment, I totally forgot about the fact that she always seemed to hate me. I totally brushed off the fact that she had nearly beaten me to a pulp the last time we met.
My Lycan stirred within me in delight and I found myself smiling despite myself. I drawled; "Leilani...!" And at the sound of my voice, she slowly peeled her eyes open to stare up at me with puppy dog eyes.
The softness I found in her gaze made my traitorous heart do a flip. I gulped. "Do you love me?"
She shook her head. "I like you, Darius... but I’ll try to learn to love you."
Real. Honest.
And that is what I loved the most about her.
If she had said that she loved me then I would’ve known that this was a lie. I would’ve known that she was plotting against me and that would’ve hurt. But her response... It showed depth. It proved how genuine she was about her feelings for me—
But wait, something I cannot seem to shake off is how she seems to have changed her mind all of a sudden. If I can remember clearly, then it was only a couple of days ago when she had told me that we could never be anything besides siblings. It was only some days ago that she had pinned me against the floor, ready to deliver the final blow.
My brows shot into my hairline as I pulled slowly away from her, such that I could see her face clearly, and then I asked;
"What made you change your mind all of a sudden?"
She stopped, frowned at me then shrugged. "Huh?"
"What made you suddenly agree to marry me?"
I saw the conflict happen in her eyes but that was all. There was no calculation whatsoever. No hidden agenda. Just genuine worry and self preservation. She lowered her head and mumbled; "I realised that the triplets were not meant for me. I thought about it and came to the conclusion that they cannot protect me and that they lack the power my wolf needs for a complete transformation."
Her words made a smile touch my face, and not bothering to hide it, I nodded; "I am glad that we are now on the same page," I said, pulling her into a hug.
Surprisingly, she hugged me back but slowly. Tentatively.
She will get used to me soon.
A beat of silence settled between us for a moment, and after what felt like an agonizing forty seconds, I finally asked the one question that has been bothering me; "When?"
She looked up, blinked and hissed; "When?"
"When do you want us to get married?" I asked, and when I saw her frown deepen, I immediately rephrased my question; "How soon do you want us to get married?"
Her brows creased with worry and for a moment, all I could think about was how to smooth those worry lines until they disappeared forever. However, just as my hands lifted to smooth them over, she beamed at smile at me and drawled;
"Tomorrow."
If we get married tomorrow then Uncle Theon or whoever that mongrel is that has suddenly disappeared into thin air would no longer hold any leverage over the throne. They would leave me alone once and for all...
For now.
