Under the same vast blue sky, people in different places were living their distinct lives. Darlene parked her car in front of the Serendipity Cafe. Just as she was about to enter, she saw Cecilia stepping out.
Today, Cecilia was in a new dress, her feet adorned with a pair of heels. Already tall and graceful, the heels accentuated her height even more. She had applied a touch of makeup, making her look stunning and radiant.
"What's the big occasion?" Darlene asked with a smile.
Cecilia grinned back, sharing her joy openly with Darlene. "Owen and I are meeting at the courthouse at nine. We're getting our marriage license today, remarrying!"
The first time they registered, it was under pressure, and she hadn't bothered to dress up, not even wearing new clothes. But this time was different. Cecilia had put in a lot of effort into her appearance. Although they weren't having a wedding just yet, getting the marriage license was a significant event. She wanted to be the most beautiful bride Owen had ever seen, to dazzle him completely.
Darlene immediately offered her congratulations, "Cecilia, that's wonderful news!"
"Thank you," Cecilia replied, handing her phone to Darlene. "Could you take a few pictures for me? I want to share them with Lucy and Tiffany, let them know I'm about to leave the single life behind."
A selfie wouldn't capture her full elegance. Darlene happily obliged, snapping nine photos before returning the phone to Cecilia. "Perfect, nine pictures for a full grid on Instagram. No need to fill it out with extras."
"Thanks a bunch," Cecilia said, gleefully flipping through the photos. She felt that today, in both spirit and appearance, she was at her best. Without hesitation, she uploaded the pictures to Instagram and shared them in their WhatsApp group chat.
Soon, messages of congratulations came flooding in from Lucinda and Tiffany, complete with virtual gifts. As Cecilia opened each one, she laughed, "Lucy and Tiffany are too kind. It's just the marriage license, not the actual wedding, and they're already sending gifts."
Darlene chuckled, "You can always refuse the gifts. I'd be happy to take them off your hands."
"Never mind," Cecilia laughed. "It's their way of showing they care, and I want to accept their kindness."
Darlene reached into her stylish purse, pulling out all the cash she had and pressing it into Cecilia's hand. "Here's a little something from me, tangible and heartfelt."
"Thank you," Cecilia said graciously, knowing the gesture came from a place of friendship. As a close-knit group, they often exchanged gifts and favors. Tiffany was expecting twins, and Cecilia planned to give them each a gold charm. Lucinda and Stefan still had their wedding to plan, and Cecilia intended to give them a generous gift as well. As for Darlene, she was single for the time being, so there was some time before Cecilia would need to return the favor.
"Darlene, I won't be able to hang out today, but my sister's here. Help yourself to whatever you want, make yourself at home," Cecilia said as she noticed Owen's car pulling up.
Smiling, she waved goodbye to Darlene. "I see my grand entrance-loving husband, so I'll leave you to it. I'm skipping lunch here, so you and my sister can fend for yourselves."
Darlene, now a regular at the Serendipity Cafe, felt at home regardless of Cecilia's invitation. "Cecilia, you deserve all the happiness!"
"And I will be happy!" Cecilia replied with a beaming smile.
Darlene watched as Owen's car came to a stop, and he stepped out, a bouquet of flowers in hand. He approached Cecilia, presenting the flowers with a tender look in his eyes that spoke volumes. Even from a distance, Darlene could sense the deep connection between them.
They would be happy, she was sure of it. Owen's devotion was evident, a man who cherished his relationship deeply. It was hard not to feel a twinge of envy. Darlene sincerely admired how both Lucinda and Cecilia had found such dedicated partners. Among their group, she was the only one still single. Pinehurst's most eligible bachelors were now spoken for, leaving her to wonder where she might find her own.
