“What if it was our child?” Jonathan’s gaze was intense.

Estelle shook her head again, “I haven’t thought about it.”

Emily walked over with a tray of fruit, “let’s eat some fruits!”

Charlie glanced silently at Emily before responding to Jonathan, “It’s almost finished. I’ll invite you guys over once it’s done.”

As the two men chatted, Estelle and Emily kept Kya company in the warm, yellow light of the living room.

Around nine o’clock, Kya started to doze off. She leaned against Charlie’s leg, listening to him read from a picture book.

Charlie’s voice, slightly slurred from the wine, was charming and deep, very pleasing to the ear.

Estelle leaned on Jonathan’s shoulder, surprisingly captivated by the story.

Emily came back from making Kya’s bed and saw that she was about to fall asleep. She went over to pick her up, “I’ll take her to bed.”

Kya suddenly opened her eyes, tightly clutching Charlie, and mumbled, “I want Charlie to put me to bed.”
