Jason barely got a wink of sleep last night. After freshening up in the morning, he scoffed at the sight of the snow blanketing the ground outside. "Great, no more morning jogs for me!"
At breakfast, his mom asked, "Why didn't you go for your run today?"
Before he could answer, she chuckled, "With the snow last night, I bet Sophia couldn't drag herself out of bed this morning!"
Jason just hummed noncommittally, feeling a dull ache in his heart.
After breakfast, as he went upstairs, his phone rang. Seeing the caller ID made him frown.
"Mrs. Jasmine?"
Jasmine spoke up, "Jason, Sophia took off back to Jefferson City early this morning. Did you know?"
Jason's pupils constricted, and it took him a moment to reply, "Really?"
"Did you two have a fight?" Jasmine probed. "She was up packing before dawn, and she didn't look too happy when she left."
Jason looked down, his voice hoarse, "Mrs. Jasmine, I'm sorry!"
Jasmine chuckled, "I'm not here to interrogate you. No need to apologize. You've been there for Sophia since she was little. Her dad's always been caught up with work, and I was too, back in the day. You were the one who stood by her as she grew up. I'm well aware."
Jason's voice was tinged with sorrow, "I might not be able to be there for her anymore."
She wouldn't want to see him again.
After a pause, Jasmine slowly said, "Jason, I want the truth from you. Do you love Sophia?"
Without hesitation, Jason affirmed, "Yes, very much so."
Jasmine immediately brightened, "I knew it! It's just our silly girl who didn't realize."
Jason thought to himself that she did know now, which was why she had left.
Jasmine continued, "You know her better than anyone. She's a bit clever but mostly clueless and incredibly stubborn. Give her some time. She'll figure out who she truly loves. She can't live without you, even more than she needs her dad and me."
Jason felt a warmth in his heart but solemnly said, "I'm not that important."
She had to be his. If she didn't want to belong to him, then she needed to return those twenty years!
His phone rang again. Picking it up, he answered, "Jewel!"
Jewel laughed, "Do you need me to come over today?"
Jason replied flatly, "No need. She's gone back to Jefferson City."
Jewel sounded surprised, "When did she leave? Why all of a sudden?"
Jason paused for a moment before saying, "Last night, I confessed my feelings to her."
Jewel was taken aback but then laughed, "Why'd you rush into it?"
Jason's expression darkened, "I think I've been too patient in the past."
Jewel kept laughing, whispering, "How did she react?"
