She bit her lip lightly, closed the cabinet, and turned back to the living room.
“Sorry, I couldn’t find your clothes. How about we just wash them?” Sylvia suggested.
Eugene smiled. “No need. I already tossed them out. I’ll just call my assistant to bring me something new.”
“That works,” Sylvia nodded.
They ate breakfast together, and by the time they finished, Eugene’s clothes had arrived.
His assistant followed him into the guest room, pulling fresh clothes from a shopping bag as he spoke. “Mr. Winters, your mother called me last night. She wanted to know if you really went on a business trip.”
Eugene rubbed his temples. Last night, there was no way he could have gone home, so he’d called his mother and told her he was away for a few days on business. He hadn’t expected her not to believe him—she’d called his assistant to double-check.
“What did you tell her?” Eugene asked.
“I told her you were definitely out of town. Then she wanted to know why I didn’t go with you, so I said I had some family issues to handle.”
Eugene had chosen his assistant well—quick-witted and discreet. Pleased, he nodded. “Good. In the future, if my mother calls again, just make up a story. There’s no need to tell her everything.”
The assistant grinned sheepishly. “She’s just worried about you, sir.”
“She’s got too much free time,” Eugene snorted. “If she spent half as much effort keeping Aries in line, maybe he wouldn’t be such a handful.”
“Jonathan’s only thirteen,” the assistant offered. “It’s normal for boys his age to be a bit wild. He’ll settle down as he gets older.”
Eugene didn’t want to talk about family matters. He finished dressing and reminded his assistant, “Don’t tell anyone about my injury—not even my father. I’m not going to the office today. If my dad asks, just say I’m out of town again.”
“Understood,” the assistant nodded.
They headed out together. The assistant offered a polite goodbye to Sylvia in the living room before taking his leave.
By the time they reached the hospital, it was nearly ten. Milanda had just arrived as well and fell in step with them as they walked inside.
Trailing a couple of paces behind, Milanda shot Eugene a sly look and whispered, “So, Mr. Winters spent the night at our boss’s place?”
Eugene glanced at Sylvia’s profile, his eyes warm, and replied with a hint of a smile, “I should thank your boss for taking me in.”
“Not bad!” Milanda grinned. “You’re making progress, and fast!”
Eugene couldn’t help but smile. “She was just being kind. It’s not what you think.”
“One step at a time!” Milanda gave him an encouraging wink. “I’m rooting for you.”
“Thanks,” he replied, amusement in his eyes.
Sylvia turned to look at Milanda, who quickly composed herself and decided not to say another word to Eugene.
