Grandpa Evert let out a forced, awkward laugh.

As soon as he hung up, anxiety gnawed at him. He immediately ordered Marina to call Grandpa Wallace and ensure he wouldn't actually show up in J City during this critical moment.

The old man owned actual firearms, and legally at that!

Knowing the stakes, Marina quickly dialed her grandfather. "Don't be angry, Grandpa. I can handle this."

"That Evert family is full of snakes. I could hear them plotting all the way from B City," he grumbled. "Your mother refused to listen to me back then. She insisted on marrying your father and got pregnant with you just to force my hand! Now it's your turn, and you'd better not let them manipulate you. Stand your ground. As long as I'm around, you have nothing to fear!"

A genuine smile—her first in days—touched Marina's lips. "I know you love me, Grandpa. And I know exactly what I'm doing. Please don't worry."

"Are you sure you don't need me down there?" he asked.

"I don't need you to deploy just yet," she teased gently. "Once this is all settled, I'll come to B City and spend the holidays with you."

"Calling off the engagement with that Foster boy is for the best anyway," Grandpa Wallace chuckled. "When you get to B City, I'll introduce you to someone much better."

Marina lowered her eyes. "Okay," she murmured, her throat tight.

Forced into a corner by Grandpa Wallace, Grandpa Evert had no choice but to call Grandpa Foster to discuss formally dissolving the marriage pact.

Grandpa Foster was taken aback. "What happened? When Marina was over at the house, she and Carson seemed perfectly fine together!"

"It's our Marina... she's insisting on calling it off," Grandpa Evert said sheepishly. "We only want what's best for them, but we can't force the younger generation. It's a modern world, after all. Arranged marriages don't hold the weight they used to."

"They probably just had a fight," Grandpa Foster mused. "Let's give them some time to cool down. I'll ask Carson if he did something stupid to upset her."

He chuckled warmly. "I'm very fond of Marina. I would hate to lose her as a granddaughter-in-law. So, let's not make any rash decisions like these kids. Once they've got this out of their systems, they might just get back together."
