The scent of sandalwood drifted from the private chapel. Miranda Foster took a deep breath, feeling something was terribly amiss. Marina had visited their home several times, and Miranda's intuition told her the girl had genuine feelings for Carson.

Had she been mistaken?

After Carson left, Miranda gave Marina a call.

Marina exchanged pleasantries, her tone entirely normal. "Mrs. Foster, I've been completely swamped lately. I'll come visit you once things settle down."

With a single sentence, she effectively blocked Miranda's attempt to invite her over to see Carson. Miranda smiled gently. "It's freezing out. Make sure you take care of yourself, no matter how busy you are."

Marina paused, her voice turning slightly hoarse. "You too."

Miranda pressed gently, "Carson mentioned you fell for someone else. Is that true?"

After a long silence, Marina spoke in a low voice. "Just... take his word for it."

Miranda's tone softened even more. "But I don't believe that, Marina. What did Carson do to make you this angry?"

"He didn't do anything," Marina replied softly. "He's always been this way. I just didn't want to stay trapped in a dead-end relationship anymore. I'm sorry."

If there was anything she was reluctant to let go of, it was her fondness for Miranda.

Miranda heard the absolute finality in her voice. She spoke slowly. "Whatever happens, even if you break up, I hope it's amicable. No misunderstandings, no resentment. And I hope you'll still come visit."

Marina choked up. "I will."

Two days later, the two families decided to meet for dinner. It was an opportunity to clear the air face-to-face. If there were misunderstandings, they could resolve them; if not, they hoped the meeting might at least salvage the relationship.
