Both Harry and Amy froze in shock—neither of them had expected Sylvia to be so ruthless.
Sylvia’s voice was cold, emotionless. “Where’s the necklace?”
Blood dripped steadily from Harry’s face onto his shoulder. His hands shaking, he pulled the necklace from his pocket and handed it to Sylvia.
She barely glanced at it before passing it to Amy. “Is this the one?”
Amy took it, nodding nervously.
Sylvia slipped the paring knife back into her bag, then tossed it into a trash can a few yards away. She turned to Milanda and Amy. “Let’s go.”
This time, Harry didn’t even try to stop them. He pressed himself against the wall, barely daring to breathe.

Once they’d left Harry’s place, Sylvia took a good look at Amy. Half her face was swollen and bruised, the corner of her eye red with broken blood vessels, her arm mottled with purple marks. Sylvia’s tone was grave. “This is serious. You could press charges.”
Amy shook her head. “No, I don’t want to make a scene. I just want it to be over.”
Milanda was furious. “He’s not afraid of consequences, so why should you be?”
But Amy just shook her head again. “Let’s just leave it.”
Sylvia sighed, helpless in the face of Amy’s stubbornness. “How do you feel? Do you want to go to the hospital, get checked out?”
“No. I don’t want to go back to the hospital. I’ll be fine—it’s just bruises,” Amy said quietly.
Sylvia looked at her for a long moment. “Okay, let’s go back to the office and clean you up. You can stay there for a few days if you want.”
This time, Amy didn’t argue. “Thanks, boss.”
Sylvia drove, taking Amy back to the office.
Milanda sat beside Amy in the backseat, her anger only growing as she took in the extent of Amy’s injuries. “How could he do this to you? He’s a monster.”
Amy choked back a sob. “We’ve argued before, and he’s shoved me, but he’s never actually hit me. This time… I’m really done with him.”
“I told you, we’re done,” Amy sobbed.
“I didn’t agree to any breakup, you hear me? If you don’t come back tonight, I’ll come find you myself!” Harry shouted.
“I’m not coming back. If you dare come to my place, I’ll call the police!” Amy finally snapped.
“Oh, call the cops. Let’s see if they can camp out at your house twenty-four seven.” Harry’s voice dropped to a menacing growl. “You try to leave me, and I’ll make sure your whole family pays for it.”
“Don’t you dare!”
“Try me!” Harry spat. “If you want your family safe, you get your ass back here right now.”
Amy hung up in terror, her hands icy.
Milanda looked at her, worried. “What did he say?”
Amy’s face was pale with fear. “He said he’s coming to my house. He said… he’d kill my family.”
