“Are you sure you’ve found something? There really is something going on?” Sylvia asked eagerly.
“Let’s order first. We can talk while we eat,” Eugene replied, slipping off his suit jacket and settling across from her.
After they’d placed their orders, Eugene poured Sylvia a glass of water and lowered his voice. “I’ve dug up everything about Harry—where he’s from, what he’s been doing, and exactly what he’s done with all that borrowed money.”
Sylvia arched an eyebrow. “Didn’t he use it to pay off his boss after that accident?”
“No,” Eugene said firmly. “Harry’s from F City. He’s been here in J City for five or six years, working as a junior IT guy. But he got fired about two weeks ago. And yes, he’s up to his neck in online loans, but not because he crashed into his boss’s car. The real reason? He’s been spending a fortune on a hostess at Blue Oasis.”
Sylvia’s eyes narrowed in disbelief.
“He’s blown through all his savings on her,” Eugene continued, “and when that ran out, he started taking loans from every company he could find—at least five or six. He’s been juggling debts, borrowing from one to pay off another, just to keep up appearances.”
Sylvia felt a wave of disgust. Amy had been so determined to help Harry pay off his debts, and all the while, he was using the money to keep another woman on the side. And now, even after everything, he still refused to let Amy go. The man clearly had no sense of decency left.
“Should we tell Amy about this?” Eugene asked.
Sylvia nodded without hesitation. “She needs to know.”
She’d worried Amy might fall back into old patterns, pining for Harry once the initial hurt faded. But learning the truth would put an end to that for good.
Eugene appreciated how decisively Sylvia handled things. He smiled warmly. “Now we need to figure out how to help Amy get rid of Harry for good.”
Sylvia’s eyes glinted as she considered. “Maybe we could start with that hostess.”
“I thought the same thing,” Eugene said. “I’ve already looked into her. I’ve got an idea.” He leaned in, outlining his plan to Sylvia.
She gave him a searching look. “Isn’t that asking a bit much from you?”
Eugene’s handsome eyes softened with a hint of mischief. “Are you worried about me?”
“What happened?” Milanda asked, surprised.
Sylvia said, “Let’s call her over.”
“I’ll go get her,” Milanda replied, and went off to find Amy.
When Amy and Milanda returned, Eugene repeated everything he’d uncovered.
For Amy, it was like a bolt from the blue—she looked completely shell-shocked. “That can’t be true. If it was, I would have known.”
Milanda scoffed. “He’s not stupid. Why would he let you find out?”
Eugene added, “I had someone keep an eye on him last night. He went to see that hostess after midnight. They booked a room at the hotel across from Blue Oasis. If you don’t believe me, I have pictures.”
Eugene pulled up the photos on his phone and handed it to Amy.
