Sylvia smiled. “It’s really thanks to everyone’s hard work.”
“Don’t be so modest. Everyone can see how capable you are. All those companies I introduced to you? Nearly every one of them comes back to thank me. So don’t think I’m just sending clients your way for your sake—I’m building my own connections, too.” Eugene clinked his glass with hers. “Really, I should be thanking you for being so outstanding!”
Sylvia could tell he was just trying to put her at ease. She took a small sip of her wine. “Then here’s to our success together.”
Eugene watched her as he drank, his eyes gentle and warm.
“Eugene!”
A clear, playful voice rang out. Sylvia turned to see a young woman hurrying over, her dress gathered in her hands to keep from tripping.
The girl looked about twenty-three or twenty-four, her shoulder-length hair curled in soft waves. She wore a custom M&M evening gown, and with her wide, almond-shaped eyes and dramatic lashes, she looked like she’d just stepped out of a mascara ad.
“Sylvia, let me introduce you. This is Jolin Farley, Mr. Farley’s daughter—she’s in grad school right now.”
Eugene then turned to Jolin. “Jolin, this is Sylvia, the founder of HEGNAN.”
“Nice to meet you, Ms. Farley.” Sylvia greeted her with an easy, polite smile.
“Hello.” Jolin gave Sylvia a quick once-over, her tone lukewarm at best.
She turned right back to Eugene, her voice dipping into a playful whine. “Eugene, I haven’t seen you in forever! Why don’t you come over anymore?”
Eugene replied with the same mild smile, “I’ve been busy lately. And your father’s schedule is packed, too.”
“He’s busy with his own stuff. You could still come see me!” Jolin’s enthusiasm was unrestrained. “We’re going sailing this weekend—are you coming?”
“I’m afraid I don’t have time this weekend,” Eugene answered politely, declining.
Before Sylvia could reply, Greg, the chairman of HaSen, walked over with Jolin on his arm.
Greg beamed. “Ms. Jarvis, there are so many guests here tonight. I hope you’ll forgive us if we haven’t been the best hosts.”
“You’ve been more than gracious. Thank you, Mr. Farley, for your trust. I wish you continued success and prosperity.” Sylvia responded with her trademark poise.
Greg’s smile broadened. “I was just telling Jolin how impressive you are. So young, yet running such a large company—remarkable!”
Jolin suddenly chimed in with a smirk, “It’s just a small company, isn’t it? What’s so impressive?”
Greg’s expression darkened. “Jolin, that’s no way to speak. Ms. Jarvis is about your age—maybe you should learn a thing or two about maturity from her.”
Jolin scoffed. “Dad, you want me to take lessons from someone in PR? Are you serious?”
