Sylvia smiled. “You should get to your class. I’ll go find Grace myself. I think I saw her in the courtyard.”
Jonas glanced back. “Alright. I saw Professor Quintin’s phone in the classroom, so she must be nearby. If you can’t find her, just come back and get me.”
“Okay,” Sylvia replied with a nod, then walked through a side door of the library and into the courtyard.
Sure enough, as soon as she stepped outside, she saw Grace sitting on a bench, a paintbrush in hand, analyzing a little girl’s drawing.
Beside them was a row of gardenia bushes, their large, white blossoms in full bloom, exuding a stunning, elegant fragrance. It was a perfect reflection of Grace herself—gentle, refined, and endlessly soothing.
Seeing Sylvia, Grace offered a soft smile and patted the little girl’s shoulder. The girl clutched her sketchbook and hurried back to the classroom.
“Sylvia!” Grace called out, walking toward her.
Sylvia drew closer and gave her a light hug. “I’m here.”
Grace’s hair was a little longer than it had been at the New Year, pinned up with a white jade hairpin that gave her an even more scholarly and graceful air.
“I have a big favor to ask,” Grace said with a smile. “Now that you’re here, you have to stay with me for a few days.”
Sylvia’s lips curved into a smile. “Most people would move heaven and earth to attend one of your classes, and here I am, personally invited. I’m incredibly honored.”
Grace’s smile was warm. Suddenly, she seemed to remember something. “I want you to meet a friend of mine.”
She turned and called toward the second floor of the library, “Gab! Gab, could you come down for a moment?”
A jolt went through Sylvia. Fearing she had misheard, she waited. A moment later, she caught a figure emerging from the side door out of the corner of her eye. She couldn’t stop herself from turning.
His ruggedly handsome face appeared before her, so suddenly it took her breath away.
Gabriel was just as surprised to see Sylvia. His dark eyes narrowed for a fraction of a second before he composed himself and continued walking toward them.
Sylvia maintained her serene smile. “I came to see Grace and perhaps learn a little about painting from her.”
“Ms. Jarvis has taken up a new hobby?”
“It never hurts to have another skill.”
“Not working anymore?”
“I’m on vacation.”
“Giving up on your boyfriend too?”
Sylvia fell silent.
