What about forever?
She let out a soft, wry laugh and went back to finishing her soup.
The estate residents had a group chat, and with the heavy rain, Grace had sent a message early that morning canceling classes for the day. She’d also advised everyone to stay in their villas and not wander around. With the downpour, there was a risk of rivers flooding and landslides on the roads outside the estate. It was safest to stay put.
Before heading upstairs after breakfast, Sylvia grabbed her medical kit to change Gabriel’s dressing. The entire process was completed in absolute silence. Afterward, she returned to her room and, taking advantage of the free day, opened her laptop to catch up on work.
She also sent a message to Eugene, asking how Grandma Winters was doing.
He called her almost immediately. It was raining in J City, too, he told her. His grandmother was sleeping more and more, but she still refused to go to the hospital. At this point, there was nothing more to be done but wait.
Sylvia offered him what comfort she could.
Eugene wanted to keep talking, but his assistant came in to inform him of an emergency board meeting. He had to hang up.
Sylvia put her phone down and focused on her work, occasionally glancing at the lively conversation in the estate’s group chat.
Jonas and the others were playing poker. He and Una were a team and were on a winning streak, while Jenny and York were losing miserably. The penalty for losing was having a small turtle drawn on your forehead with a marker.
Jonas won again, and Una snapped a picture just as he was drawing a turtle right over Jenny's eye. He showed no mercy, creating a surprisingly detailed caricature. When she closed her eye, it looked like a tiny turtle; when she opened it, the shell disappeared, leaving the four legs looking like four thick, comical eyelashes. It was absurdly funny.
Jonas was laughing so hard he was doubled over on the sofa.
Jenny posted a selfie in the chat, and Sylvia laughed until tears streamed down her face.
Una typed, [Next time, we’ll do the other eye.]
An hour later, she stood up and stretched, walking out to the balcony. The rain had finally lessened from a downpour to a gentle drizzle. The distant mountains, however, were even more obscured by the mist.
She leaned against the railing and glanced down, seeing Gabriel sitting on his balcony, reading a book. One arm was draped casually over the armrest, his legs were crossed, and a cup of coffee sat on the table beside him. He looked completely, utterly relaxed.
Sylvia rarely saw him like this, and she found herself watching him for a few extra moments.
As if sensing her gaze, he turned his head and looked up. Their eyes met. His were sharp and deep, and his voice was cold when he spoke. "On the battlefield, the ones who hesitate are the first to die."
Wow.
Even the damp, gloomy weather couldn't cool his temper.
