“It was nothing,” Gabriel said.
Grace let go of Sylvia’s hand. “Well, you’ve both had a long day. You should get some rest.”
Sylvia smiled warmly. “You too, Grace.”
“Goodnight.”
The three of them walked inside together, parting ways at the junction. Gabriel and Sylvia headed back to the villa they were staying in.
The lights were on inside, but the housekeeper had already gone to bed.
“You didn’t have dinner,” Gabriel said. “I can have someone bring you something.”
“No, that’s alright,” Sylvia declined, shaking her head. “I’m exhausted and don’t have much of an appetite. I think I’ll just go to bed.”
“Okay. If you get hungry in the middle of the night, call me,” Gabriel said, his voice gentle.
Sylvia gave a slight nod and turned to go upstairs.
Gabriel watched her go, a feeling of unease settling over him. He had to say something.
“I didn’t know about it beforehand,” he called out.
Sylvia paused on the stairs and looked back down at him. “I know,” she said softly.
“But,” Gabriel continued, his voice as deep and dark as the night, his honesty unflinching, “I knew the moment Sean walked in. He wore extra layers to hide his build and used a voice modulator, but I know him too well. I recognized him instantly.”
“And I could never…” She turned her head, her gaze resolute, the rims of her eyes tinged with red, like a smudge of rouge, beautiful and bleak. “I could never, in this lifetime, let another man touch me.”
If she had to choose between them, she would choose him to live, without a moment’s hesitation. But she knew what her fate would be in the hands of a group of mercenaries, and she would never allow herself to be put in that position. So, suicide, after he was safe, was the best outcome for both of them.
A storm raged in Gabriel’s eyes. He fought to control the turmoil churning inside him. “Sylvia…” he began, his voice hoarse.
She offered a faint curve of her lips. “Sleep well. Goodnight.”
Then she was gone, up the stairs.
She was truly exhausted. After a quick shower, she collapsed into bed. She had thought her racing mind would keep her awake, but she fell asleep almost instantly.
