Jonathan’s eyes turned icy, and his lips formed a straight line. “What do you mean?”
“I’m sure you know exactly what I mean, Mr. Lamont,” Lambert said with earnest gravity. “If you let Estelle go, name your price. I will agree to any condition, without question.”
Jonathan rose to his feet, looking down at Lambert. “Frankly, I will never forgive you for selling Ella out. But she considers you a friend, so I will treat you as one. If you are here to attend our wedding and offer your blessings, you are welcome. If you have other intentions, let me be clear: whether it’s in J City or Tripe, I call the shots.”
Lambert stood up, matching Jonathan in height, his own presence carrying a sharp edge. “Using your power to pressure a woman… I see Alvis is just as I imagined.”
With that, he turned and walked away.
Jonathan was left utterly bewildered. What on earth was he talking about? Did the Brennan family not test for intelligence when choosing their heir?
Back in the private room, the appetizers had arrived. They sat down to eat, the atmosphere even more strained than before. Thanks to Estelle’s earlier warning, however, there were no more arguments.
During the meal, only Lambert spoke, praising the local cuisine and mentioning that his maternal grandmother used to cook dishes from this country, so he had grown up with them.
“Mr. Brennan’s fiancée is from Y Country, isn’t she?” Jonathan commented. “Perhaps you should get more accustomed to their food.”
“Linda and I have called off our engagement,” Lambert stated.
“I see,” Jonathan nodded knowingly. “But from what I hear, the next fiancée your father has chosen for you is also from Y Country’s royal family.”
Lambert’s face darkened, and he said no more.
Estelle kept her head down, a small smile playing on her lips as she focused on her food.
Lambert looked at her intently. “You don’t have to pretend with me. I’ll help you.”
“Help me with what?” Estelle asked.
His eyes were filled with pain for her. “I know you don’t like… Jonathan. You’re only with him because you have no choice. Just say the word, and I will help you get away from him.” He leaned forward, his brown eyes sincere. “The Brennan family may not be as powerful in Tripe as the Mystoria Federation, but for you, I would risk everything.”
Estelle was even more surprised. “Who told you I don’t like Jonathan?”
“Manley,” Lambert replied. “He said you two are in love and that you’re being forced to marry Jonathan.”
Estelle was speechless. She glanced over at Manley, who was now drinking tea with Jonathan, and could only shake her head. He really was a chaos agent.
