She turned back to Lambert, her tone serious and sincere. “I love Jonathan very much. I told you before, we’ve been married for a long time. The wedding is just a formality.”
“Then…” Lambert looked shocked.
Estelle couldn’t help but smile. “Manley was joking with you.”
Lambert’s face was a mixture of astonishment, anger, and embarrassment. He shot a furious glare in Manley’s direction.
From across the room, Manley saw Lambert looking at him and smiled faintly. “Want to know what they’re talking about?” he asked Jonathan.
Jonathan’s expression was calm as he sipped his tea. “No need.”
Manley smirked. “So confident in yourself, Mr. Lamont?”
“No. I’m confident in my wife,” Jonathan replied, his gaze level. “I know you’re not happy about Ella marrying me, Manley Scott, but isn’t using someone else to do your dirty work a bit… amateur?”
Manley gracefully poured more tea, his long, elegant fingers making the simple white porcelain cup look exquisite. He took a sip. “Relax. I came back specifically to wish Estelle well, nothing more. It was just a little joke, no harm done. Since Estelle likes you, I’ll make sure she marries you without a hitch. Forget me—if anyone else tries to ruin it, I’ll crush them on the spot.”
Jonathan’s dark eyes gleamed. “You’re a smart man, Manley Scott.”
Manley smiled, as radiant as a flower in the moonlight. “At least a little smarter than that Lambert fellow.”
Soon, Estelle and Lambert returned. “We’re done talking. We can go,” Estelle announced.
Manley, sensing Lambert’s cold glare, just smirked and walked out ahead of them.
Jonathan called a car for Lambert to take him back to his hotel, while Manley called his own driver. They parted ways outside the restaurant.
A smile played on Jonathan’s lips. He lifted her into his arms, carried her to the sofa, and set her down before leaning over her, cupping her chin. “That’s because you’re my rare and precious treasure.”
He bent down and kissed her.
After a long moment, Estelle’s clear eyes glistened like water. She touched her moist lips. “I don’t care what you do about Lambert, but don’t you dare touch Manley.”
The tender look on Jonathan’s face froze. “I haven’t even done anything, and you’re already this worried about him?”
She tugged on his tie, tilting her head. “Mr. Lamont, I’m about to marry you. Can we please stop with the jealousy?”
He pulled her onto his lap, a faint smile on his lips. “I won’t touch him. In fact, I’m going to invite him to the wedding so he can watch you marry me with his own two eyes.”
Estelle paused. “On second thought, just ship him back to Australia.”
