And yet, although Henson’s words were about Norah’s faults, Xavier inexplicably felt as if he were the one being criticized.
He nodded slowly. “I know.”
Henson said no more and focused on the game.
Xavier glanced up casually and saw Norah standing in the crowd in the garden, chatting with a young man in a light blue shirt.
He recognized the man, Adrian. He had come to the shop looking for Norah before, and he’d also seen him at Magdalen Sampson’s wedding.
Norah was now working at Adrian’s company.
He couldn’t hear what they were saying, but Norah was laughing so hard she was doubled over, nearly spilling the juice in her hand.
Xavier looked down at his game but felt a wave of irritation. He died twice in a row, then reached for the ice water beside him and took a large gulp.
As he tilted his head back to drink, his eyes fell on the garden again. Norah and Adrian were still talking.
The ice water did little to quell his frustration.
He forced his gaze back to his phone, trying to concentrate.
When the round ended, Henson said, “It’s getting late, Gonzalez. You should head home. I’ll let my sister know later.”
Xavier said quietly, “No rush. I’ll play another round with you.”
Henson turned his head slightly, his eyes flicking to Norah in the garden. A playful look crossed his face as he started a new game.
*
An hour later, Norah went upstairs and checked Henson’s room first.
To her disappointment, Xavier was already gone. Only Henson was there, still playing his game.
“When… did he leave?” Norah asked, leaning against the doorframe.
“Just left,” Henson said flatly, without looking up.
