“He’s not going to untangle that maze himself,” Magdalen said. “So who is he setting up?”
She glanced at Emily.
Emily just shrugged. “Don’t look at me. I honestly have no idea.”
Marina, Sallie, and the others were also in the room, watching the screen with eager anticipation.
Back in the corridor, Charlie pressed, “So, what do you say, Ms. Harriet?”
Having given her word, Harriet wasn’t about to retreat. She nodded graciously. “Alright. Let’s see if you can find the right thread and make your way over here.”
“Then it’s settled!” Charlie said with a laugh, turning to Jonathan.
Jonathan’s gaze swept over the intricate web of red threads. “Chuck,” he said calmly, “this one’s for you.”
Chuck stepped forward and placed his hand on one of the threads. With a light flick of his long, well-defined fingers, he sent a vibration down the line.
The thread quivered, causing the others to tremble in response with a faint hum.
The crowd fell silent, all eyes fixed on Chuck, waiting to see if he could pick the thread in Harriet’s hand.
Chuck flicked two more threads, his eyes scanning the vibrating maze. Then, he grasped one of the threads and gave it a gentle tug.
As he pulled, the other threads were drawn taut. He looked at Harriet on the opposite side and began walking toward her, winding the thread around his wrist as he went.
Without a single pause, the coil of red on Chuck’s wrist grew larger as he drew closer and closer to Harriet.
The onlookers gasped. Finally, having navigated around all the tangled intersections, Chuck stood before Harriet, about half a meter away. He held the thread taut, and the other end was, indeed, the one in Harriet’s hand. The crowd erupted in thunderous applause.
Harriet looked at Chuck, surprised. A faint smile touched her lips. “Very impressive, President Raye.”
What a terrible idea, Charlie.
Chuck grumbled inwardly.
Harriet held the needle steady between her lips. It was their time being wasted, not hers.
Chuck took a deep breath, placed the thread in his mouth, and took a step forward. Fixing his eyes on the silver needle between the woman’s red lips, he slowly leaned in.
Harriet’s lips were full, painted with a matte, true-red lipstick. As she held the needle, her mouth formed a beautiful, plush shape that was even more captivating up close.
For a fleeting moment, Chuck’s mind drifted. He wondered if the sharp point of the needle might prick such beautiful lips.
As the end of the thread neared the eye of the needle, they drew closer and closer, until they could feel the warmth of each other’s skin and breathe the same air.
