“If you won’t say it, I will. I trust you. Completely. I’d trust you with my life,” Jonathan said, enunciating each word.
Stella rested with her eyes closed for a moment before speaking slowly, “Are you sure we’re not getting out of here?”
Jonathan frowned instantly. “I’m serious. This isn’t some last-ditch comfort before dying.”
Stella’s voice was raspy. “Then you must be a terrible mercenary.”
So quick to trust others.
Jonathan chuckled softly. “Say what you will.”
Stella asked, “Then why do you trust me?”
“Because,” Jonathan began slowly, “if you hadn’t tried to save me earlier, you would have already escaped.”
Stella closed her eyes again to rest.
Jonathan turned his head. “How old are you?”
“Why?” the girl’s voice was still ice-cold.
“Just tell me. How old? Are you an adult yet?”
“No.”
“So young,” Jonathan felt a flicker of guilt over the kiss from earlier, but it vanished just as quickly. “If we make it out of here alive, you should quit being a mercenary. Go to school, live a normal life.”
Stella said, “A mercenary’s life is a normal life for me.”
Jonathan insisted, “No. You’ll leave it one day.”
His tone was firm, filled with unwavering belief.
Stella simply dismissed it as nonsense.
Jonathan continued, “When you leave, remember to come find me.”
“Mmm,” Stella mumbled in agreement before drifting back into unconsciousness.
Jonathan pressed his hand against the cold wall until it was chilled, then placed it on her forehead to help bring her fever down.
He had two pieces of chocolate left. He hoped they would be rescued before he had to feed them to her.

It was still nighttime, but Blue Oasis was a dazzling world of hedonism, brilliantly lit.
*Bang!* The door to a private room flew open. The floor manager hurried over to Manley and said, “Mr. Scott, there’s been a fight. Someone attacked the people in this room, they’re all injured. Should we call the police?”
Manley paused for a second, then followed the manager out. As he approached the room where the fight had occurred, just before entering, he suddenly remembered something. His face paled, and he turned and sprinted away.
The elevator was occupied, so he took the stairs, running down them in a mad dash, his expression tense.
Many people at Blue Oasis knew Manley, but they had never seen him so flustered and out of control, completely shedding his usual lazy, composed demeanor.
