Manley burst out of Blue Oasis and continued to sprint toward the small park across the street. He ran with all his might, at top speed, ignoring the blaring car horns and the curses of the drivers he cut off. He crossed the road, entered the park, and frantically looked around.
Finally, on a bench under a magnolia tree, he saw Estelle.
She was wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans, curled up on the bench. Her black hair fell around her, partially covering a face that was flushed and feverish.
In the dim, yellow light of the park, surrounded by deep green foliage, her huddled form had lost its usual cool composure, replaced by a vulnerability that made one want to embrace her.
Manley was breathing hard, his heart pounding in his chest. He slowly approached her and knelt down, speaking with incredible care and gentleness.
“Estelle!”
Estelle looked up. Her normally clear, dark eyes were now dazed and moist. She looked at him with some surprise. “Manley?”
Manley nodded immediately, raising a hand to touch her face. “How are you feeling?”
Estelle instinctively flinched away, a hint of wariness in her eyes. The flush on her face was sharpened by a look of vigilance.
Manley’s tone grew even softer. “I know you’re in pain. I won’t hurt you. Come with me, let me help you.”
Estelle clenched her fists, her nails digging into her palms. A sliver of clarity returned to her eyes as she said with difficulty, “You… stay away from me!”
“I promise I won’t hurt you. I’ll take you to a hospital, have a doctor counteract the drug in your system,” Manley said, his tone almost reverent. “Trust me, please?”
Estelle still shook her head. “No, my friend is coming soon. I’m not going anywhere.”
Manley was getting anxious. He stood up and reached for her hand. “Don’t wait for him. He’s the one who will hurt you, not me!”
The corners of Estelle’s eyes were crimson, giving her a dangerously alluring look. She tried to push Manley away, but her body was weak and limp. As she struggled, she tumbled off the bench.
“Estelle!” Manley cried, rushing to catch her.
“Estelle!” Manley rushed over, his handsome eyes filled with urgency. He looked at her with an almost pleading expression. “Don’t go with him, please? Just trust me this once!”
Jonathan’s gaze was sharp and questioning as he looked at Manley. “What are you trying to do? She’s not a pawn in your fight with Lucille, nor is she a bargaining chip to use against me. Stay away from her!”
“Ngh…”
Estelle bit her lip, her body going limp as she started to slide off the bench. Jonathan immediately scooped her into his arms and, without another moment’s hesitation, strode away.
Manley chased after them, blocking Jonathan’s path, his eyes red. “You’re not taking her. Either leave her here, or we take her to the hospital together.”
“I have a doctor at home. I’ll have her treated,” Jonathan said, his face cold. “Move.”
“Treat her, or take advantage of her?” Manley shot back.
