Deliberately ignoring the woman still seated at the table, Mrs. Winters said with a smile, “Evelyn, this is my son, Eugene. He graduated from Capital University and came back to help with the family business. The entire Winters family relies on him now!”
After showering Eugene with praise, she turned to him. “This is Ms. Quintin, Old Mr. Quintin’s granddaughter. Not only is she beautiful, but she’s also incredibly talented!”
Eugene nodded politely. “Ms. Quintin.”
Evelyn also smiled. “A pleasure.”
Mrs. Winters had called her three times asking if she was free to meet. Since she had accepted quite a few gifts from Mrs. Winters, she couldn't just burn that bridge. She agreed to meet, and as they chatted, Mrs. Winters had steered her toward the garden. The moment she saw Eugene, she knew what Mrs. Winters was up to.
Eugene was handsome enough, gentle and refined, much like her ex-boyfriend Lynn, which gave her a favorable impression.
But compared to Gabriel Carnes, he was still leagues behind.
So she maintained a lukewarm attitude, projecting the proper reserve for a woman of her standing without seeming overly cold.
At that moment, Sylvia stood up and said to Eugene, “You seem busy. I should get going.”
“It’s nothing. We weren't finished talking,” Eugene said, trying to stop her.
Sylvia discreetly glanced at the time. Two minutes had passed.
Mrs. Winters spoke with a fake smile. “Well, well, I didn't see you there. Isn't it Ms. Jarvis? Drumming up PR business even at the Lamont family wedding?”
“Mom, what are you talking about?” Eugene’s face darkened. “Sylvia is a friend of Ms. Sampson's and the bride, Estelle.”
Evelyn suddenly spoke up. “Sylvia, don't you remember me?”
Even Eugene looked a little surprised.
Evelyn’s tone was distant. “Yes, we’ve met a few times.”
Seeing they weren’t particularly close, Mrs. Winters said dismissively, “Well, Ms. Jarvis is in public relations. She has a wide circle of friends, so it’s not surprising you know each other.”
Sylvia ignored Mrs. Winters's sarcastic remarks. She glanced at the time again. Three minutes had passed.
The sense of urgency returned. She bid Eugene farewell. “I have something to attend to, so I'll be leaving now. I’ll consider what you said.”
Eugene knew that with his mother’s attitude, it would only be awkward for her to stay. He nodded apologetically. “Okay, I’ll call you later.”
