“Mr. Winters.”
They sat down, and Sylvia asked, “What did you want to see me about?”
“Have something to eat first,” Eugene said, pushing the cake toward her.
“You must not have had lunch yet.”
“I had a little something earlier. I'm not hungry.”
Eugene took a sip of his drink and said gently, “I wanted to talk to you about my grandmother's inheritance. Her will states that the inheritance should be settled one month after her passing. I still want to honor her last wishes, and I hope you will accept the portion she left to you. I’m being completely sincere.”
If Sylvia were to renounce her share, it would have to be handled according to legal succession.
His grandmother’s dowry would fall into the hands of his father and Jonathan. He knew very well that as soon as they got it, they would immediately sell it off to liquidate the assets.
He really didn't want to see his grandmother’s dowry squandered by them.
Eugene shared his concerns with Sylvia. “I hope you’ll accept the dowry according to my grandmother’s wishes. I don’t want to see it all sold off, ending up in who knows whose hands.”
Sylvia looked troubled. “The only reason your grandmother left her dowry to me was because she thought we would be together. Now that we've broken up, if I were to accept it, I would be going against her true intentions. I wouldn't feel right about it.”
Eugene leaned forward slightly, his gaze deep as he looked at Sylvia. “My grandmother genuinely liked you. In her final moments, she told me that you might leave me one day and that I shouldn't force you to stay. She understood. The fact that she still left you the dowry, knowing all that, means you shouldn't have any reservations.”

On the second floor of the castle’s banquet hall, Gabriel stood by a French window, smoking. His dark eyes watched the two people talking in the garden below.
He exhaled a puff of smoke, the pale gray cloud obscuring his expression, but his gaze only grew sharper, piercing through the haze, chillingly cold.
He picked up his phone and sent two messages, then sat down in a chair to wait.
Upstairs, when the man saw her put her phone down and continue chatting nonchalantly with Eugene, his face instantly darkened.
Across the table, Eugene looked at Sylvia expectantly. “So, what do you think?”
Sylvia took a sip of her drink and nodded slowly. “I'll think about it. You should also think if there are any better solutions.”
Just as she finished speaking, a loud voice called from behind them, “Eugene!”
Eugene looked up and frowned, slowly rising to his feet. “Mom.”
Mrs. Winters had arrived with Evelyn, wearing a benevolent smile. “What a coincidence!”
But as she got closer and saw Sylvia, the smile on her face froze. She had gone to great lengths to find Eugene with Evelyn, only to run into him with Sylvia.
