Once the call connected, Mrs. Winters quickly explained the situation, her tone immediately shifting to one of injured innocence.
“Evelyn, my son was just being mischievous, playing around with that little girl. He’s just a child himself, what could he possibly have done to her? Besides, he’s already been taught a lesson. You should see how badly he’s been beaten. If it weren’t for the Lamonts’ celebration, I would have called the police!”
“Now the James family is demanding accountability, and you’re the only one who can help us smooth this over.”
“Today is the Lamont family’s wedding, and the bride is your grandfather’s student. If you just say a word for Aries, the James family will surely show you some respect!”
After Mrs. Winters’s lengthy plea, Evelyn took a moment to consider.
She didn’t really want to get involved in the Winters family’s mess; they weren't that close. But then she had another thought. Although she was a Quintin, few people really knew her. If she could get the James family to grant her this favor, others would see her in a new light.
The Winters family would also be even more indebted to her.
Within moments, Evelyn made her decision and readily agreed. “I’ll go speak with Mrs. James. It was just children playing around, no need to make such a big deal out of it.”
“Evelyn, thank you so much! From now on, you’re a great benefactor to the Winters family!” Mrs. Winters gushed with exaggerated gratitude.
“Where are you now?” Evelyn asked. “Bring your son over. I’ll take him with me to see Mrs. James.”
Mrs. Winters immediately understood Evelyn’s intention. “I’ll bring him to you right away,” she said eagerly.
When they met, Evelyn frowned at the sight of Aries’s bruised face. “They really did a number on him.”
“He just teased that little girl for a second, and he ends up like this. And they’re still not letting it go. Talk about abusing their power,” Mrs. Winters muttered sarcastically, glancing around.
Since it involved the Lamont family, Evelyn refrained from commenting directly. “I’ve found out where Mrs. James is resting. I’ll take Aries there now. Don’t worry, Estelle and I are good friends. Even if the James family won’t do me a favor, they’ll have to give Estelle face.”
Mrs. Winters’s flattery grew even more earnest. “That’s why I thought of you first. As long as you’re involved, I have nothing to worry about.”
Just as Kya left, Evelyn and Aries entered.
Evelyn wore a sweet smile. “Mrs. James.”
“And you are?” Mrs. James asked with a faint smile, her eyes glancing over Aries.
“You should know my grandfather,” Evelyn replied with a smile.
Mrs. James nodded with a polite laugh. “I do. I just saw you both at the ceremony. What can I do for you?”
“It’s like this,” Evelyn began in a soft voice. “I’m good friends with Aries’s cousin and I know Mrs. Winters as well. Mrs. Winters just came to me and said that Aries was just playing with your granddaughter and things got out of hand. She asked me to bring him here to apologize to you.”
“Playing?” Mrs. James’s smile faded, her expression becoming regal and imposing. “To call it ‘playing’ suggests the Winters family feels no remorse. In that case, what is there to apologize for?”
