“You can’t go!” Evelyn quickly stopped Mrs. Winters. “Sylvia was also invited today. If you make a big scene, do you think only the James family will come after you? What about the Lamonts?”
The mention of the Lamont family instantly extinguished the fire in Mrs. Winters’s belly.
Both the James and the Lamont families could make the Winters family disappear. She couldn’t afford to offend either of them.
She redirected all her unvented rage into hatred for Sylvia. “That little witch. I won’t let her get away with this!”

Sylvia and Gabriel walked out to meet Old Mr. Jarvis. Sylvia spoke in a low voice, “Thank you for what you did back there.”
If he had actually given the Winters family face because of her, she would have been truly embarrassed.
Gabriel’s expression was grim. “You shouldn’t be getting involved with a family like the Winterses in the first place.”
Sylvia lowered her eyes. “Eugene is different from them. My involvement is with him, not his family.”
“Not his family?” Gabriel’s face hardened, his cold eyes flashing toward her. “Eugene is the centerpiece of the Winters family. His every move, everyone he associates with, is being watched by them. And you say it has nothing to do with them?”
Sylvia looked up to meet his gaze, her own unwavering. “So what? Should I just hesitate and overthink everything, do nothing at all when something happens? Is that the right thing to do?”
Gabriel’s eyes were cold and deep as he stared at her. “Fine. Your ‘true love’ is so very grand.”
With that, he strode away.
Sylvia watched the man’s tall, chilly departing figure and gently bit her lip. A moment later, her eyes gleamed, and a slow smile spread across her face.
She followed after him.
Outside the room where Old Mr. Jarvis was resting, she saw Gabriel leaning against the opposite wall, waiting for her.
Sylvia walked over and whispered, “Why aren’t you going in?”
