Now another one?!
And she called him… Gavin?
It reminded him of his late grandmother.
April looked at Sallie in a panic. "Why would I want to frame Mr. Porter? Stop talking nonsense! You're one of his people, aren't you? You're here to put on a show!"
"A show?" Sallie scoffed. "You're a much better actress than I am. You're here to set up my Gavin for someone else, yet you put on such a heartbroken and wronged performance. If I didn't know him so well, I might have actually believed you."
"You know him? If he told you he loves you, that just proves he's even more of a player!" April shouted in frustration.
"He didn't say he loves me. I'm the one who loves him!" Sallie declared, shooting Gavin a playful wink. Her expression grew even sweeter. "Don't worry, Gavin. I have proof that she's deliberately trying to frame you. You really don't know her, and she doesn't know you at all."
"What on earth is going on?" Mr. Porter was completely bewildered.
"Don't worry, I have a recording for you."
Sallie played the audio she had recorded of Ula and her friends. She had started recording late, so it began with April asking how Gavin had offended Ula.
But the rest of the conversation was crystal clear: because Gavin had rejected Ula's family company, Ula held a grudge. The three of them had conspired to ruin Gavin's blind date, tarnish his reputation, and even drag the James family's name through the mud.
April tried to bolt halfway through the recording. Gavin stepped forward, motioning for Sallie to let her go. He said coldly, "You can go. And tell Ula that the Ferber family will pay the price for her foolishness today."
Sallie released her grip, and April scurried away.
"So that's what happened. That Ferber girl is so petty, resorting to such childish tricks. It's ridiculous," Mr. Porter said, shaking his head.
Mrs. Porter added, "Childish, yes, but also vicious. She almost fooled us all."
The young woman meeting Gavin breathed a sigh of relief, but her expression was still strained as she looked at Sallie. "So that one was a fake, but what about this young lady?"
Sallie was cutting her steak and looked up with a smile. "Which means I was just trying to stop someone from causing trouble at the wedding. It wasn't entirely for your sake."
She took a bite of steak, her attitude carefree. "Seriously, no need to thank me. You should get back to your date."
Watching her eat so heartily made Gavin realize he was hungry too. He settled in and joined her. "You're Sallie, the bride's cousin, am I right?"
"Yep," Sallie mumbled, taking a sip of her cocktail.
"Then let's have a proper introduction." Gavin extended his hand. "Gavin."
Sallie shook it. "Sallie."
"A pleasure."
