Estelle’s smile faded slightly. “I spoke with Evelyn today. As expected, she doesn’t want to leave the Quintin family.”
Jonathan’s eyes narrowed. “That’s to be expected.”
Estelle mused, “So, that's another problem. What if Sylvia is my teacher's granddaughter? What will happen to Evelyn?”
She felt partly responsible for this situation and wanted to help resolve it properly.
“There’s one more thing,” Estelle added. “Evelyn seems to have been getting close to the Winters lately.”
Jonathan’s eyes narrowed slightly. He nodded. “Alright. I’ll have someone keep an eye on her. As long as she doesn’t harm you or the Quintins, we can let other things slide.”
…
All evening, Evelyn had been forcing a smile. On one hand, she was distraught and worried about not being a Quintin; on the other, she had to pretend to be happy that Georgia might have found her real daughter.
This inner conflict made her smile appear strained, despite her efforts to hide it.
Old Mr. Quintin, still feeling sorry for her, told her to go upstairs and rest early.
Once back in her room, Evelyn slumped to the floor against the closed door. Finally, she could drop the act. The panic and fear were plain on her face.
She was already at her lowest after finding out she wasn't Georgia's daughter, and now Sylvia might be?
How could that be possible?
How could it be Sylvia?
She was the one Estelle had brought back from Citadel. Old Mr. Quintin had been so fond of her. Why did it end up being Sylvia?
She would rather it be anyone else.
She truly hated Sylvia. From the very beginning, Sylvia had competed with her for everything—for Gabriel Carnes, for Georgia. Whatever she wanted, Sylvia had to snatch it away.
Tears streamed down Evelyn’s face as she clenched the fabric of her dress, her heart filled with resentment and bitterness.
A dark glint appeared in her eyes. After a moment, she got up, wiped her tears with a tissue, and dialed a number on her phone.
