“I’ll go find him. It shouldn’t be a problem. We’re just getting the results early, not altering them. That, of course, is impossible!” Mrs. Winters said with a knowing laugh.
Evelyn understood the unspoken meaning in Mrs. Winters’ words and pretended to be confident. “Of course we don’t need to change the results. I’ll be happy just to get them an hour early.”
Mrs. Winters replied, “Don’t you worry. Just tell me the time tomorrow, and I’ll be there ahead of schedule.”
“Thank you so much!” Evelyn said excitedly. “I’ll contact you tomorrow then.”
“Sounds good!”
They exchanged a few more pleasantries, but Evelyn was distracted and ended the call by saying she needed to take a shower.
Hanging up, Evelyn’s heart pounded in her chest. She couldn't change the test results, but she could see them early. An hour would be enough time for her to prepare.
Even if she wasn't Georgia's daughter, she would not let Georgia acknowledge Sylvia.
If Sylvia turned out to be the real one, would she still have a place in this family?
She couldn't let Old Mr. Quintin have his biological granddaughter. As long as the real Nana didn't return, she could be the real one, even if she was a fake.
Evelyn’s mind raced as she plotted her strategy for the next day.
…
The next morning, from her second-floor window, Evelyn watched Georgia drive away.
Old Mr. Quintin followed her out, giving her a few last-minute words of advice. His anxious expression showed how much he was anticipating the results of the test between Georgia and Sylvia.
Evelyn couldn't help but sneer. Old Mr. Quintin claimed to love her like his own granddaughter, but wasn't he now more eager for Sylvia to be his real one?
Her hand tightened on the curtain, the resentment and bitterness in her heart so strong it felt like she could tear a hole through the fabric.
Downstairs, Estelle and Jonathan had arrived. Old Mr. Quintin told them that Georgia had already left.
Estelle took his arm and led him inside. “You should go inside and wait patiently. Even if you went now, the results won't be ready for four hours.”
