Evelyn was still rooted to the spot, stunned by the sudden turn of events.
It wasn’t until the murmurs of the surrounding crowd reached her that she snapped back to reality. She immediately hailed a cab and followed after the car that had taken Sylvia and Mr. Winters.
When she arrived at the hospital, Evelyn didn’t rush inside. Instead, she pulled out her phone to make a call.
The phone rang five or six times. Just as she thought he wouldn’t answer, the call connected and a deep, cool voice came through: “Who is this?”
Evelyn steadied herself before blurting out anxiously, “Gabriel, something’s happened. You need to come to the hospital.”
Gabriel’s voice was calm but concerned. “What happened?”
Evelyn hurriedly explained, “Sylvia and Mr. Winters were hit by a car. They’ve both been brought to the hospital. You need to come right away!”
She could almost hear Gabriel’s breathing hitch on the other end. The steadiness in his voice vanished. “Which hospital?”
Evelyn quickly gave him the name.
Before she could even finish speaking, he had already hung up.
Gabriel sped to the hospital as fast as he could. On the way, he tried calling Sylvia three times, but there was no answer. Panic and dread swelled within him, his face growing increasingly grim.
Twenty minutes later, he arrived at the hospital and headed straight to the front desk. “About half an hour ago, was a man and a woman admitted after a car accident? Where are they?”
The receptionist was shuffling papers and responded absently without looking up, “I don’t know. Ask someone else.”
“Where are they?” Gabriel repeated, his voice hoarse and edged like a blade.
Startled, the receptionist finally looked up and, meeting his dark, icy stare, immediately straightened. “I’ll check for you right away!”
Gradually, the color returned to Gabriel’s face, but his dark eyes turned cold and unreadable, like a winter’s night, all emotion hidden in their depths.
“Gabriel!”
Evelyn came over, standing nervously beside him. “Did you see Mr. Winters and Sylvia? I’ve been searching everywhere for them.”
Gabriel turned to look at her. “What exactly happened?”
Evelyn frowned. “I’m not entirely sure. Someone invited me to that restaurant, and then I saw Mr. Winters and Sylvia arrive together, so I went out to say hello. While the three of us were talking, a car suddenly sped straight toward Mr. Winters. Without a thought for her own safety, Sylvia threw herself forward to save him. Then another car came barreling in, and Mr. Winters pushed Sylvia out of the way and got hit himself.”
“I was so frightened, I couldn’t react as quickly as Sylvia. Once we got to the hospital, I couldn’t find them, so I called you.”
Gabriel said nothing, just gave Evelyn a cold, piercing look before turning and walking away.
