Page froze, staring at Georgia in disbelief. Seeing her calm and distant gaze, he couldn't help but feel unsettled. The girl who used to see nothing but him was, in the end, someone he had pushed away and lost forever.
Regret and pain overwhelmed his heart, and once again he found himself doubting the choice he had made so many years ago.
After a pause, he asked quietly, “I heard our daughter has been found. Is that true?”
As soon as he spoke, Page noticed the guarded look in Georgia’s eyes and quickly reassured her, “Don’t worry. I would never try to take her from you. Even though I’m deeply curious about her, I know I never did my part as a father. There’s no way I could take her away from you.”
Georgia nodded plainly. “She’s never asked about you, and she’s not interested in her father. So, I won’t arrange for you to meet.”
Page had still been holding onto a hint of hope, but now he let it go entirely. Bitterness welled up inside him as he could only nod in agreement. “Then please don’t mention me to her. I don’t have the face to see her, anyway.”
He went on, “The reason I came back this time was to bring my parents abroad so I can take care of them. I might not be coming back again after this. Before I leave, there’s something I’ve thought over a thousand times, and I finally decided to tell you.”
Georgia said simply, “Go ahead.”
Page clasped his hands, as if searching for the right words. “Georgia, the reason I suddenly left all those years ago… was because your father came to see me.”
Georgia looked at him, her surprise evident. “What?”
“Your father found me, and he gave me a sum of money to get me to move overseas,” Page said, lowering his head in shame. “I didn’t get a full scholarship at the time, and my family didn’t have the money to send me abroad. So I was tempted. I’m sorry. All these years, this has weighed on me. I hope you can forgive me.”
He had chosen a future and money over the person he loved, and he had abandoned his daughter. That was why, for so many years, he had not dared to see her, come home, or even ask about her.
His own conscience had tormented him for more than twenty years.
After the first wave of surprise, Georgia no longer felt much. She replied quietly, “You chose what was more important to you. There’s nothing wrong with that.”
