After putting down her phone, Sylvia searched online for information about the J City arms factory, but there was little available—nothing of real use.
As for the person in charge, there was no trace of them at all.
Truly discreet.
Since she couldn't learn anything about the influential figure behind the scenes, Sylvia knew she would just have to handle things as they came.
She pulled out the documents on Nash's company and spent the entire afternoon familiarizing herself with their products. She didn’t want to just stand around looking pretty; even if she couldn’t be an expert, at least she wouldn’t be totally clueless when asked about their business.

After work, Nash came to pick Sylvia up.
Nash was in his forties and, unlike most men his age, hadn’t gained weight or lost his hair. He didn’t have the slick or jaded air you might expect from a businessman, either. Instead, he wore a well-fitted black and gray tracksuit, sported sunglasses, and carried himself with an elegant, charming confidence.
Seeing him, Sylvia grinned in surprise. “Isn’t this a pretty important occasion? Isn’t your outfit a little too casual today?”
Nash took off his sunglasses, his gaze bright and clear. “That just shows you don’t get it. I’m not the main character tonight. Better to keep a low profile and not steal the spotlight.”
Sylvia gave him a playful, approving look. “I’ll keep that in mind—a valuable lesson!”
Nash quickly replied, “Please, Mr. Carnes, don’t be so modest. I’m just showing off in front of an expert. I could learn a lot from you!”
Sylvia pretended to ponder for a moment. “The way you’re talking me up is making me nervous about what I have to do next!”
Nash burst out laughing and opened the passenger door for Sylvia himself. “You don’t need to be nervous. If anyone should be worried, it’s me—I’m counting on you to keep me grounded!”
Oscar chuckled. “I had a feeling you’d be here, Nash. Everyone in J City knows your reputation—no way you’d miss this when the arms factory is seeking new partners!”
Nash answered with a modest smile. “Just here to see what’s happening.”
Oscar then turned to greet Sylvia and went on to introduce the other man to Nash—a fellow defense supplier and a prominent businessman from H City.
After exchanging polite greetings, Claire stayed noticeably wary of Sylvia. While the others chatted, she purposely pulled out her phone and pretended to answer a call.
“Oh, Seth! Yes, I’ve prepared the contract. We can sign anytime. If you’re too busy, I can deliver it myself.”
“No, really, it’s my pleasure. I should be the one thanking you for your support!”
Claire came from an academic family and, at about thirty years old, carried an air of maturity. Her slight accent contrasted sharply with her polished, decisive look, making her all the more memorable.
