As the days passed and the end of the month neared, there were only two days left until the recognition banquet.

Because of Evelyn, Mrs. Winters had been especially attentive to anything concerning the Quintin family, so she heard from others early on that they would be hosting a recognition banquet.

She called Evelyn excitedly. “Evelyn! I heard Old Mr. Quintin is throwing a recognition banquet for you. I’ll definitely be there—Eugene’s father and I both want to attend.”

Evelyn had a moment of panic, but quickly composed herself. “You can’t come.”

Mrs. Winters was surprised. “Why not?”

“Did you get an invitation from my grandfather?” Evelyn asked.

Mrs. Winters admitted awkwardly, “No.”

Evelyn explained earnestly, “If you show up without an invitation, how am I supposed to introduce you? I can’t just make something up, and if I tell the truth, my grandfather will be furious. If a scene breaks out in front of all the guests, it’ll be embarrassing for everyone.”

Mrs. Winters immediately deflated. “You’re right.”

Evelyn continued, “I think it’s more important for you to talk to Mr. Winters right now. He’s not taking my calls or meeting with me. I really need to think about our relationship, so please don’t come to my recognition banquet.”

Mrs. Winters grew anxious. “Evelyn, don’t be angry. You know Eugene was injured recently, and before he recovered, he was busy hosting the company’s fiftieth anniversary celebration—he’s seriously exhausted. Please, just give him some understanding. I’ll help you talk to him.”

“I need to get back to work, let’s leave it at that,” Evelyn said, and hung up directly.

Evelyn’s attitude left Mrs. Winters even more anxious. After hanging up, she complained to Mr. Winters in front of him, scolding Eugene for being ungrateful and unable to distinguish right from wrong.

Mr. Winters’ brow furrowed deeply. “Eugene is becoming increasingly ruthless—he’d rather rely on outsiders than trust his own family. It’s truly disappointing.”

“I don’t care what’s going on at the company, but one thing’s for sure—Evelyn is the woman he must marry!” Mrs. Winters’ expression turned fierce. “If he dares not to, I’ll show up at his office and make a scene every day—he won’t have a single peaceful day.”
