Seeing that Sylvia's hair was still damp, Georgia guided her onto the bed and began gently drying it with a hairdryer.
Sylvia hugged her knees to her chest, dressed in a long skirt. Her hair, fluffed and tousled by the warm air, cascaded around her, veiling her softly contoured profile. For once, the brightness she usually wore seemed subdued, replaced by a quiet, endearing innocence.
“Didn’t you say you had something to talk to me about, Mom?” Sylvia asked.
As Georgia ran her fingers delicately through her daughter's hair, she asked, “Have you and Gab ever thought about getting married?”
Sylvia lowered her long lashes. “No, we haven’t.”
“No?” Georgia smiled. “Gab’s not so young anymore. Hasn’t he been urging you to marry him?”
“Mom, my relationship with Gabriel isn’t what you think,” Sylvia replied.
Georgia frowned slightly, turning off the hairdryer and sitting beside her. “What do you mean?”
Sylvia tucked a stray lock of hair behind her ear. Fresh from her shower, her features remained strikingly beautiful. “I mean… he could leave at any time, and I’m already prepared for that.”
Georgia was taken aback. “Gab doesn’t want to take responsibility for you?”
Sylvia shook her head and openly explained to Georgia about Gabriel’s responsibilities in Tripe, as well as how their relationship began—she told her everything, honestly and without reserve.
“He has his own obligations. He’s protected me for a long time and given me so much. I understand what he has to do now.”
But Georgia’s heart ached for her daughter. “Would you like me to talk with Gab?”
“No,” Sylvia replied, furrowing her brow.
Georgia read the meaning in her expression and felt an even deeper pang. “Why do you have to bear everything alone?”
Their family had only just been reunited, and if she and her mother left, what would become of him?
Georgia said, “After the ceremony, I’ll talk with Dad. If you decide to go to Y Country, I’ll try to persuade him to join us, too.”
“Okay. I’ll let you know as soon as I decide,” Sylvia nodded.
Late that night, Sylvia returned to her own room. Seeing the unicorn plush on her bed, she walked over to her desk, pulled a small box from a drawer, and opened it. Inside lay a unicorn keychain.
The silver chain held an adorable ceramic unicorn, as fresh and bright as the day she got it, even after all these years.
She took it out and laid it in her palm. The unicorn’s tiny eyes were closed, as though it were lost in a lovely dream.
After all these years… was it time to wake from the dream?
