Tomorrow would be the family recognition banquet, and although it was already late, everyone was so excited that no one wanted to go to bed.
Georgia personally went into the kitchen and made some late-night snacks. The family gathered around, eating and chatting.
Old Mr. Quintin, ever the meticulous one, reminded them again, “Are the invitations sent out exactly according to the list I gave you? Did we miss anyone?”
Georgia smiled. “Yes, there were no mistakes. I checked the list three times. I also wrote a few extra invitations to some good friends who have helped me look for news about Nana over the years.”
“Be sure to invite them!” Old Mr. Quintin nodded in agreement.
While everyone was talking, Gabriel noticed that Sylvia seemed lost in thought. He quietly poured her a glass of juice and asked, in a gentle voice, “What’s on your mind?”
Sylvia looked up, a little startled, her gaze still a bit dazed as she met his eyes. She quickly shook her head. “It’s nothing!”
Beneath the table, Gabriel reached over and gently held her hand, his dark eyes deep and reassuring. “There’s really nothing to worry about. It’s just so everyone can get to know you.”
Sylvia smiled back at him, signaling that she was really fine.
Georgia glanced over and said with a warm smile, “Nana, your outfit for tomorrow is already ironed and hanging in your room. If you want, you can try it on again before bed tonight.”
Sylvia laughed softly. “Just promise me it’s not a princess dress!”
Gabriel, recalling her pajamas, couldn’t hold back a quiet chuckle.
Old Mr. Jarvis suddenly turned toward them and asked, “What are you laughing at?”
Sylvia tilted her head and smiled. “Yes, Mr. Carnes, what’s so funny?”
Gabriel squeezed her hand a little tighter, keeping his composure. “Just thinking that you look beautiful in anything.”
People offered congratulations, praising how accomplished Sylvia was, or marveling at how much she resembled her mother, Georgia. The mood was filled with happiness and laughter.
Evelyn sat quietly off to the side, her expression dark and her nerves unsettled as she watched Sylvia, now the center of everyone’s attention.
She took out her phone and messaged Mrs. Winters: [Mrs. Winters, please remember our agreement—make sure you don’t come. Do you understand?]
Mrs. Winters replied almost immediately: [Don’t worry, Evelyn. I’ll stay away.]
Feeling somewhat relieved, Evelyn looked up—only to catch a few guests watching her curiously. She quickly lowered her eyes, pretending to check her phone again.
Around ten o’clock, everyone set off for the hotel.
As the doors to the banquet hall opened, Jonathan Lamont, Estelle, Magdalen, Jason, Sophia Jones, and several others emerged from inside. Sylvia’s eyes widened in delight. “Estelle, when did you and Mr. Lamont get back?”
