Evelyn bit her lip, hesitating for a moment. “Well, I do have a small favor to ask… I—I like Mr. Winters, and Mrs. Winters hopes that he and I can be together, too. Sylvia, could you please stop seeing Mr. Winters?”
Sylvia was taken aback, but a slow smile curled across her lips. “Evelyn, if the only way you can feel secure with Mr. Winters is by asking other women to stay away from him, do you really think there’s any love between you at all?”
Evelyn offered a bitter smile. “But I don’t know what else to do.”
Sylvia looked at her calmly. “What happened to the courage you had when you went to Citadel to look for Lynn?”
Evelyn hesitated for a moment, then replied in a soft, uncertain voice, “I’m being brave now, too—pursuing Mr. Winters.”
Sylvia was left speechless for a moment. At last she said, “Don’t worry. Apart from work, Mr. Winters and I won’t have any personal interactions.”
Evelyn nodded gently, and just as she was about to say something more, an excited voice suddenly sounded behind her: “Evelyn!”
Evelyn’s face went pale as she spun around. Mrs. Winters was walking toward them along the stone path. Evelyn’s mind went blank; she stood rooted to the spot.
Mrs. Winters, elegantly dressed and radiating joy, beamed at her. “Evelyn, congratulations!”
Evelyn's complexion turned ashen, and her voice came out strained. “Didn’t I tell you not to come?”
“I wanted it to be a surprise! How could I miss such a happy occasion? I even prepared a generous gift, and I’m going to present it to you in front of Old Mr. Quintin,” Mrs. Winters said, almost bursting with excitement.
With Sylvia standing right there, Evelyn didn’t dare to cover anything up. She hurriedly ushered Mrs. Winters towards a more secluded corner. “Come with me, please!”
But Mrs. Winters held onto her hand and spoke kindly, “Wait a moment, Evelyn.”
The Quintin family hadn’t invited the press and kept the event low-key, with only close friends and family present. Seeing this woman she didn’t recognize, Georgia assumed she must have come as someone’s plus-one.
“Oh, listen to you. Such bravado! This is the Quintin family’s family reunion—what right do you have to throw me out?” Mrs. Winters retorted aggressively, her tone turning harsh. “And if you’re Sylvia’s mother, maybe you should teach her to be less shameless. Tell her to keep her hands off my son!”
Georgia frowned. “Your son? And who is your son?”
Sylvia tried to intervene, but Georgia held her back. “Don’t get involved—let her clarify herself.”
Evelyn felt the blood freeze in her veins. She quickly rushed forward to stop Mrs. Winters from saying anything else, her panic making her tone rough. “Mrs. Winters, please, just leave!”
Not waiting for any protest, Evelyn pulled Mrs. Winters away.
