Evelyn pushed Mrs. Winters’ hand away, her gaze dark and intense. “I know. I have no intention of marrying Eugene. I’ll keep this child and raise it myself. As for the gifts and the money—I won’t be returning any of it. Consider it... the Winters family’s child support.”
Mrs. Winters cried out, “You think you’re worthy of carrying a Winters child?”
Evelyn, eyes reddening with emotion, confronted her. “Maybe I’m not. But don’t forget, this was all your doing. You orchestrated everything! You approached me with your own motives, Mrs. Winters. We both had our agendas—neither of us is blameless!”
Mrs. Winters spat through gritted teeth, “If you hadn’t interfered, Sylvia would never have broken up with Eugene!”
Evelyn let out a cold laugh. “You looked down on Sylvia’s background from the start—don’t try to pin everything on me! And honestly, do you really believe Sylvia ever cared for Eugene? Haven’t you met Gabriel Carnes? He’s the one Sylvia truly loves!”
Mrs. Winters balled her fists so tightly she looked ready to slap Evelyn again.
But Evelyn stared her down. “I have no intention of getting involved with your family ever again. I don’t need Eugene to take responsibility for this child. And I’d appreciate it if you, Mrs. Winters, would stay out of my life from now on.”
With those words, Evelyn turned and left.
Maybe it was because she was carrying the Winters family’s child, but none of the servants at the door tried to stop her.
Mrs. Winters stood frozen in the living room, watching Evelyn’s departing figure, trembling with rage.
No. She couldn’t let Evelyn give birth to this child. If she did, there was no telling what Evelyn might do—she might use the child to make a claim on the Winters estate, and their family would never have peace again.
She had caused this problem herself, and she’d have to be the one to deal with it.
Suppressing her panic, Mrs. Winters called over the family driver and instructed him in a low, urgent voice.
The driver listened, wide-eyed with fear. “I—I can’t do that, Mrs. Winters. Someone could die!”
