The person who hit her hadn’t meant to take her life, so her injuries weren’t serious—though, of course, she’d lost the baby.
It was already deep into the night when Jonathan came with Estelle. He waited outside while Estelle went in to see Evelyn.
When Evelyn woke, she overheard a nurse talking to Estelle.
“Before bringing the patient into the ER, we tried to contact Eugene as she requested. We found his number in her phone, but he refused to come, saying he had nothing to do with the patient.”
“We went ahead with emergency treatment. If you’re her family, you’ll need to complete the hospital admission paperwork.”
Estelle nodded. “I understand. I’ll take care of it shortly.”
“All right,” the nurse replied before turning and leaving.
Estelle turned back toward the bed. Evelyn was awake, gazing at her in a daze.
“Estelle…” she called out, her voice weak.
Estelle sat down by her bedside and said softly, “Just focus on recovering. The driver who hit you has already been apprehended. He confessed that Mrs. Winters hired him—she’s also been arrested.”
Evelyn’s face was paper-white, and she spoke in a trembling voice, “Estelle, I brought all of this on myself.”
Estelle frowned, watching her silently.
Evelyn’s voice was choked with tears, her face bleak and hopeless. “I’ve done so many wrong things. I was vain, greedy. I tried to push Sophia aside, envied Sylvia, tried to sow discord between her and Old Mr. Quintin… I’ve made so many mistakes. This is all just my punishment.”
She had gone from having nothing, to having everything, and then lost it all in an instant.
She drowned and struggled in that journey, barely able to hang on—until, in the end, there was nothing left.
Estelle listened as Evelyn began to breathe unevenly, her voice weakening. “Stop talking,” Estelle said, frowning. “It’s enough to know your mistakes. You still have the chance to make things right—focus on getting well.”
But Evelyn shook her head, crying, her expression dark and defeated. “I don’t think I have another chance. I know I’ve done so many things to hurt you and Sylvia. There are nights when I can’t sleep, and I just feel so disgusted with myself.”
“Evelyn,” Estelle said quietly but firmly, “You did make mistakes. The biggest one was always pinning your hopes on someone else. Your adoptive parents treated you badly, yet you finished college anyway—you could have made a life for yourself. But first, you relied on Lynn to change your fate. When that failed, you turned to the Quintins. When you realized you couldn’t count on them either, you placed your hopes on the Winters family. Didn’t you ever think that someone like Mrs. Winters could not be trusted? Even if you’d managed to keep the truth hidden long enough to marry Eugene, as soon as Mrs. Winters found out, she would have shown you the door all the same.”
Evelyn’s eyes grew unfocused, and she murmured almost to herself, “You’re right… why was I so foolish?”
