Estelle could truly understand Evelyn. They had both lost their biological parents at a young age—the only difference was that Evelyn had grown up in the care of adoptive parents who resented and belittled her, causing her to doubt herself and constantly feel on edge.

Jonathan spoke quietly, “It’s a realization that cost someone their life. I just hope it’s real remorse.”

Walking side by side, Estelle said, “I believe she really knows she was wrong. She begged me not to tell Old Mr. Quintin about her pregnancy and injuries—she doesn’t want him to be even more disappointed in her.”

Jonathan arched an eyebrow. “Does she still want to go back to the Quintin family?”

Estelle shook her head.

“I don’t think so.”
