Estelle could truly understand Evelyn. They had both lost their biological parents at a young age—the only difference was that Evelyn had grown up in the care of adoptive parents who resented and belittled her, causing her to doubt herself and constantly feel on edge.
Still, Estelle believed Evelyn was fundamentally kind. Seeking out Lynn wasn’t just because he was her only support at the time, and their willingness to help each other at Citadel was also rooted in the goodness within her.
Estelle took Evelyn’s cold hand. “Sylvia will forgive you, and so will Old Mr. Quintin. Treat this as a new beginning—focus on getting better.”
Evelyn, however, just wept, repeating over and over,
“Estelle, I’m sorry.”
“I’m truly, truly sorry!”

Only when Evelyn had drifted off into a weak sleep did Estelle leave the hospital room. Outside, she turned to the man who had been waiting for her.
“Let’s go. I’ve already arranged for a nurse to take care of Evelyn and handle the formalities. Let’s go home.”
Jonathan got up and took her hand. “What did you talk about?”
Estelle answered, her tone heavy, “Evelyn kept confessing. She’s full of regret.”
Jonathan spoke quietly, “It’s a realization that cost someone their life. I just hope it’s real remorse.”
Walking side by side, Estelle said, “I believe she really knows she was wrong. She begged me not to tell Old Mr. Quintin about her pregnancy and injuries—she doesn’t want him to be even more disappointed in her.”
Jonathan arched an eyebrow. “Does she still want to go back to the Quintin family?”
Estelle shook her head.
“I don’t think so.”
