A soulful, melancholy love song drifted from the distance, the gentle strumming of a guitar making the night feel even more serene and still.
Through all their twists and turns, she found that her eyes had always been fixed on him—and he was always at the end of her gaze.
Sylvia clung tightly to him, her voice rough and choked with emotion as she finally spoke,
“I love you. I really, truly love you.”
Feelings she’d hidden for so many years at last found their chance to be released, surging out like a winding river breaking through the barriers around her heart.
“In the past, I never dared to wish for anything. But then, around the holidays, you gave me hope. That’s when I started to get greedy."
“I knew I shouldn't be so greedy, so I tried to embrace new feelings, found a sense of family, and looked forward to a free future. But why is it that in the end, none of this can compare to you?”
When she had nothing, he was her everything. When she gained so much, he became more than her everything.
Even if she possessed all the beauty the world could offer, without him, her life would still be empty, without joy or meaning.
Gabriel felt the damp warmth of her tears soaking into his back. A dull ache filled his chest, and he reached out to hold her.
“Sylvia—”
She held him even tighter, her hoarse voice edged with despair.
“I love you, and I hate you. Why is it that you never left me a way out—no path except to follow you? Why didn’t you leave me even a single escape?”
The night wrapped around them, and Gabriel’s eyes, deep as the sea, glimmered in the darkness as he asked quietly,
“Will you still leave?”
Pressing her forehead against his back, Sylvia shook her head, doing her best to stifle her sobs—her voice muffled but resolute,
“I won’t go. I’m not going anywhere. I’ll wait for you here in J City.”
“A year, two years—however long it takes. Whenever you come back, I’ll be here.”
She had found the answer to the question she’d been struggling with since the holidays.
She no longer wanted to fight it. She loved him. She couldn’t change it, so she could only surrender to her heart, willing to be bound to him.
