A gentle radiance fell across the man's features, making him seem both dignified and distant as he spoke in a low voice. “I've left Tripe's affairs to Bruce and the team. I’ve come back home for good. Of course, I can't completely disengage—if there’s something they really can’t handle, I’ll have to step in. But for the most part, it’s out of my hands now.”
Sylvia stared at him in shock, unable to speak for a long while. Her autumn-colored eyes shimmered with a growing joy, though wariness lingered, as if she hardly dared to believe it.
“Really?” she finally asked.
“Of course it’s real. I would never lie to you.”
The happiness inside Sylvia seemed to bloom out of control. Her sparkling eyes, luscious red lips—they all seemed alive with excitement as she looked at him.
Gabriel reached to touch her cheek, lowering his head for a kiss.
Even in her overwhelming joy, Sylvia managed to find a sliver of clarity. She leaned back just out of his reach, raising an eyebrow playfully. “When did you decide you weren’t leaving?”
Gabriel’s sharply defined lips pressed tight together. He said nothing.
Sylvia’s exhilaration faded into irritation. “You decided before you came back, didn’t you? Why didn’t you tell me?”
Leaving his work behind couldn't have been a spur-of-the-moment choice; he must have made all the arrangements before coming back. Yet, all this time, he told her nothing.
She remembered the anxiety she’d endured and felt her anger rise all over again. She shoved him aside and started to walk away.
Gabriel’s long arm swept her back against him, pulling her into his embrace. “It wasn’t on purpose,” he said softly.
Sylvia’s eyes, still red from crying, looked dewy and aggrieved, her beauty only enhanced by the flush at their corners. Even upset, she carried an irresistible allure. “And you still claim it wasn’t intentional?”
She struggled to push him away, but he easily caught her wrists and trapped her securely in his arms.
His tone turned gentle, almost coaxing. “Come on, don’t be like that.”
Sylvia, caught between happiness and anger, found herself powerless against his strength. In frustration, she lowered her head and bit his shoulder.
Gabriel didn’t flinch, letting her vent her feelings. He knew she needed a way to release the swirl of emotions inside her.
On the outside, she always seemed so agreeable—but only he ever saw this side of her, the little tempers no one else witnessed.
He could already picture himself spending their future together endlessly humoring her, spoiling her. He’d had one person to care for at home, and now there would be another; it was as if he’d happily taken on another beloved to dote on.
