Back at the Jarvis family estate, Old Wade saw Gabriel entering hand-in-hand with Sylvia. After an initial moment of surprise, he hurried over to greet the couple, inwardly marveling at how Old Mr. Jarvis had predicted this perfectly.
“Isn’t this the very sign of vitality he was waiting for?” Old Wade thought to himself, smiling as he led them to the study to see Old Mr. Jarvis.
The two entered together. Sylvia’s eyes glimmered with a smile as she greeted warmly, “Grandfather!”
Old Mr. Jarvis’s face glowed with delight, and his tone, gentle and full of meaning, said, “Now that you’re here, are you planning to stay for good?”
With the 11 a.m. flight already missed, it was indeed too late to return to J City. Seeing them arrive together, Old Mr. Jarvis could already guess what had happened.
Sylvia’s expression was composed and graceful. “Yes, I’m staying.”
Gabriel chuckled. “Where else could she possibly go now?”
With that, Gabriel placed two marriage certificates on the desk before Old Mr. Jarvis. “Grandfather, we’re married.”
Old Mr. Jarvis stared at the two red booklets, momentarily stunned.
Sylvia quickly apologized, “I’m sorry, Grandfather. We acted a bit impulsively and didn’t consult you or our families before registering. I hope you can forgive us.”
Gabriel glanced at her teasingly, “Didn’t you say it wasn’t impulsive?”
Sylvia gave him a look.
Gabriel smiled, seeing her reaction. “Don’t worry, Grandfather won’t be angry.”
Old Mr. Jarvis’s hands trembled slightly as he picked up one of the booklets, opening it to inspect every detail. The smile on his face grew broader and broader. At last, he looked up at them with a delighted and almost incredulous expression. “You two really know how to give your old grandfather a surprise!”
Syliva hurried to explain, “It was actually me who brought it up to Gabriel first.”
At this, Old Mr. Jarvis’s smile faltered slightly. He frowned at Gabriel, “How could you let the woman be the one to propose marriage? Doesn’t that reflect poorly on the Jarvis family?”
Sylvia’s intention had been to take the blame so Old Mr. Jarvis wouldn’t criticize Gabriel, but she hadn’t expected this reaction. She started to explain anxiously, but Gabriel gently squeezed her hand and said, “Grandfather is right. The man should be the one to propose. If there’s blame, I’ll take it.”
