Claire was left dumbfounded by Gabriel’s words, a chill creeping down her spine. She plopped into her chair with a thud, stunned and speechless.
Sylvia had already made her way to the door. Seeing Milanda approaching, she called out, “I’m heading out for the day. Please see Claire downstairs.”
Milanda took one look at Gabriel’s tall, commanding figure and couldn’t help but smile to herself. Now she finally understood why her boss had suddenly decided not to go abroad.
Even heroes fall for beauty—a weakness no one escapes.
Milanda shot Sylvia an OK sign with her fingers and nodded with a smile. “Don’t worry, I’ve got it covered!”
Sylvia returned to her office to grab her things and then left with Gabriel.
In the elevator, Sylvia finally turned to Gabriel. Her eyes, bright and intent, lingered on him. “You said all that just now for Claire’s benefit, didn’t you?”
Gabriel offered a faint smile. “Whether I said it for her or not, it’s the truth. Why else do you think I came to J City?”
Sylvia drew a quiet breath, overwhelmed by emotion. Without another word, she pressed her lips together and squeezed his hand tightly.
When they reached the lobby, Gabriel went to get the car. While Sylvia was waiting, she happened to run into Nash, who had come to find her.
Nash stepped out of his car and walked straight toward her. “I heard Claire tried to stir up trouble for you. Did you see her?”
Sylvia smiled. “I did, but it’s all fine now.”
Nash let out a sigh of relief. “Now that I’ve signed the partnership with the defense firm, Oscar definitely won’t be happy about it. He might have Claire keep bothering you. If she tries anything, you have to let me know.”
Sylvia just smiled warmly. “I will.”
Nash grinned, “Honestly, we couldn’t have pulled this deal off without you. Since both of us are leaving early today, let me treat you to dinner.”
Sylvia replied, “Maybe next time. My husband’s here to pick me up—he just went to get the car.”
“Your husband?” Nash looked genuinely surprised. “When did you get married?”
