Claire’s face turned pale, her eyes wide with a mixture of shame and anger.
Sylvia shot Claire a calm, dismissive glance. “Claire, your thinking is limited by your own perspective, and that shallow perspective makes your vision short-sighted and narrow.”
Claire’s expression tightened. “What exactly are you trying to say?”
Sylvia, with striking beauty and a gentle yet commanding presence, replied, “If you go back and think through every detail of that evening’s reception, isn’t it obvious? Mr. Bard and I knew each other well before that—and our relationship is far deeper than you ever imagined.”
Claire froze for a moment.
She tried to recall, but she simply couldn’t remember Gabriel Carnes showing any familiarity or intimacy toward Sylvia that night. There had been no sign that they knew each other at all.
With that in mind, Claire decided Sylvia was just putting on an act. She smirked, her voice biting. “You and Mr. Bard know each other? Next you’ll tell me you’re Mrs. Bard, and that you took his last name Jarvis for the sake of appearances!”
Knock, knock, knock!
There were several knocks at the door. The partially open door swung wide, and in stepped a tall, striking man—Gabriel—with chiseled features, dark eyes, and a commanding presence that seemed almost innate.
Gabriel looked at Sylvia. “Still working?”
Sylvia checked her watch and smiled lightly. “Just finishing up.”
Claire stared at Gabriel in disbelief. “Mr. Bard?”
Gabriel finally turned her way, his expression cool and distant as he gave her a slight nod of acknowledgment.
Claire’s demeanor instantly shifted. The edge vanished from her voice, replaced by a sycophantic smile. “Mr. Bard, what brings you here?”
He answered himself, “Because of my wife.”
Claire’s face went crimson, then white, mortified as she looked at Sylvia.
Even Sylvia seemed surprised, slowly turning to Gabriel.
Gabriel continued, “So is it really so strange that I’d choose to work with a company owned by a friend of my wife? If it makes her happy, she can have the final say in any of my business matters.”
“If you don’t get it, have Oscar come talk to me directly. And if you or anyone else tries to give my wife a hard time again, I won’t let it slide—no matter whose idea it was.”
With that, Gabriel led Sylvia out the door.
