Sylvia smiled and nodded. “Wherever you are, that's where I'll be. If we end up settling in C City, I can even persuade Grandpa to move with us.”
Gabriel picked up his phone and showed Sylvia several photos.
Sylvia glanced over the images of a courtyard with elegant, ornate beams and green-glazed rooftops, her brow arching in surprise. “The Jarvis estate?”
“It’s not the Jarvis estate in C City—it’s a new one I’m building in J City,” Gabriel explained. “Construction has been going for almost half a year and it’s nearly finished. Of course, it’s impossible to make it identical to my family's old home—some antiques, and rare woods like zitan and huanghuali, simply can't be replicated. But I've tried my best to restore the atmosphere.”
The Jarvis estate had stood for over a century. Every flower, every blade of grass, each brick and tile bore the weight of history and tradition. The redwood gallery, especially, could never truly be duplicated.
Still, Gabriel had spared no expense on this new courtyard, selecting only the finest materials. The difference wouldn’t be much.
Sylvia’s voice was light and happy. “This way, Grandpa can come live in J City in the future.”
He’d done all this for her grandfather—and for her. It turned out, he'd already mapped out a future for them both in his heart.
What woman wouldn’t feel moved, knowing a man was planning his future around her?
Maybe it was these moments, one after another, that made her fall ever deeper and more helplessly in love—so much so that she could never regret it, not for anything.
Gabriel’s long fingers gently caressed her soft, fair cheek, his gaze dark and compelling. “If Grandpa had a great-grandchild, I’m sure he’d be even more willing to move to J City for good.”
Sylvia turned her head, softly kissed his fingertips, her eyes bewitching as she leaned close to kiss him. “Then you’d better get to work, Mr. Carnes!”
Gabriel pinched her waist, rolled over, and pressed her beneath him.
...
In the end, Sylvia’s story about “working late” for Old Mr. Quintin turned into an all-nighter, so naturally, she didn’t come home.
Old Mr. Quintin got up early, feeling rather disgruntled. Without telling Sylvia, he called Gabriel over for a private talk.
An hour later, as Gabriel left the Quintin home, he overheard Old Mr. Quintin on the phone with his own grandfather, his voice booming and still tinged with anger.
“Old Mr. Jarvis, you’ve really raised an exceptional grandson!”
Gabriel smiled faintly, stepped out, and called Sylvia. “Sylvia Jarvis, what time do you get off work tonight? I’ll pick you up and we’ll have dinner with Grandpa together.”
On the other end, Sylvia’s voice was soft and languid. “I’ll be done at the usual time.”
“Alright. Get back to work. See you this afternoon.”
“I’ll be waiting for you!”
“Good!”
Gabriel hung up and drove off.
