"So, did you really do it for me, or did you accept a bribe from Waters and purposely leak my whereabouts to her?" Charlie had lost all patience for this confrontation. "Get out!"

Guilty and terrified, Tanya knew there was no point in arguing. She turned and practically bolted out the door.

When she had gone in to deliver files yesterday, she had overheard Charlie on the phone with his girlfriend. Realizing his girlfriend wouldn't be attending the banquet, she had purposely slipped the information to Waters during a phone call.

She didn't think Charlie would care.

Who could have known...

She was consumed with regret. She had thrown away a coveted job at the James family for a necklace worth a few thousand dollars.

Inside the office, the other assistant held her breath. Knowing her boss was in a foul mood, she was terrified of getting caught in the crossfire. She also realized Charlie was making an example out of Tanya, so she made sure to look as diligent as possible.

Charlie signed the documents and looked up at her. "Do you know how to handle things from now on?"

The assistant nodded frantically, grabbed the files, and carefully backed out of the room.

Waters was known for using petty tricks to buy people off. Charlie knew she wasn't the first, and she wouldn't be the last. What infuriated him the most was the sheer stupidity of his own staff!

Gavin Porter strolled in from outside, dropped into a chair, and chuckled. "I saw Tanya packing up her desk. I asked her what happened, and she said you fired her. What rule did she break this time? Aren't you going through assistants a little too fast?"

Charlie shot him a glare without bringing up Waters. "I saw Melina at the banquet yesterday."

Gavin had to think for a second before remembering who Melina was. "She's back in the country?"

"Yeah."

Gavin gave Charlie a meaningful look. "How does it feel to see an old flame, Boss?"

Charlie frowned. The light filtering through the window illuminated his sharp profile, making him look aloof and contemplative. "When we broke up, I tried to convince her to stay. After she left, I even had a gift sent to her."

Gavin tapped his fingers lightly on the armrest, a faint smile on his lips. "And?"

Gavin remembered Melina vaguely because Charlie had genuinely treated her differently.
