Mrs. James was riddled with guilt. "It's my fault. After dinner, Kya wanted to play in the water, so I had someone take her to the pool. She must have caught a chill in her swimsuit. When I bathed her afterward, I noticed she felt really warm."
Mr. James offered some comfort. "If she just caught a chill from playing in the water, she'll be fine once the fever breaks."
Charlie nodded. "I'll stay with her. You two should go get some rest."
"Weren't you going to pick Emily up from work?" Mrs. James asked.
"I'll have the driver pick her up," Charlie said. "Let's not tell her about Kya being sick tonight. I'll let her know tomorrow."
If Emily found out, she would absolutely rush over to stay with Kya and probably wouldn't sleep a wink. She was already exhausted, and Charlie wanted her to get a good night's rest.
He could take care of Kya himself.
After taking her medicine, Kya's fever went down, but Charlie didn't dare sleep. He constantly checked her forehead. At two in the morning, her fever spiked again. He replaced the cooling patch and wiped her down with a damp towel. It took over an hour of fussing before her fever finally broke again, allowing him to lie down next to her for a brief hour of sleep.
The moment Kya shifted, he jolted awake. Seeing that she was sweating and had kicked off her blankets, he touched her cheek. It was cool; the fever hadn't returned.
He breathed a sigh of relief and pulled her into his arms. Mrs. James quietly knocked and entered the room, whispering, "Did her fever come back?"
"It broke," Charlie replied, his voice raspy.
Mrs. James gently stroked Kya's head, her heart aching as she looked at Charlie. "You didn't sleep at all, did you?"
"I slept for an hour."
She frowned. "It's almost morning. Go get some rest, I'll watch her."
"No, I won't have peace of mind if I'm not with her, and I wouldn't be able to sleep in another room anyway." Charlie smiled faintly. "I'll just hold her and doze off for a bit."
Mrs. James nodded. "It's almost dawn. I'll have the kitchen make some light porridge for when she wakes up."
"Okay!"
"It's fine, I'll grab a cab," Emily said. "I need to stop by the library anyway to borrow a few reference books."
"You're still working on the weekend?" Charlie complained.
With her hair playfully messy, Emily gave a lazy smile. "Once I finish this, I'm spending the rest of the weekend with you and Kya."
"That's more like it," Charlie smirked.
He lowered his voice. "Did you miss me sleeping in that big bed all by yourself?"
Emily arched an eyebrow and sat up. "I'm going to go wash up. Tell Kya I'll see her soon."
Without giving the frowning man a chance to respond, she ended the call, tossed her phone aside, and headed to the bathroom.
When she came back, her phone was ringing. She picked it up to see Betty calling.

As the plot thicken. Adrian is done for and he can't try to control Norah, so he'd probably tattle to Janice who's gone for two weeks. Thank you soooo much for the updates....
