Carol looked embarrassed. "Actually, I do like you quite a bit. But if you don't go back to the Hanson family, are we supposed to live in this restaurant for the rest of our lives?"
Xavier's mindset was completely different now. His expression grew even more aloof. "You don't need to consider that anymore. We aren't going to be together."
Carol felt a bit reluctant. "Think about it again. You are the eldest son of the Hanson family. You're supposed to go back and inherit the family assets. What kind of future is there staying in a barbecue restaurant? I'm only saying this for your own good!"
Xavier looked at Carol, recalling Estelle's words.
"You will never meet another girl who likes you as purely for who you are as Norah does. Once you miss it, it's gone!"
His chest tightened with a suffocating pain. He stood up and said coldly, "You don't need to come here anymore."
With that, he turned and strode away.
Carol watched the man's back disappear. Furious and indignant, she slammed her bag on the table. She just couldn't understand why Xavier refused to return to the Hanson family as the wealthy heir and preferred to hole up in this tiny barbecue restaurant.
Her dream of becoming a wealthy socialite wife was shattered once again.
*
Xavier returned to the backyard. Looking at the wall of climbing roses, the osmanthus tree, the cat house, and even the replaced wooden table, an unspeakable wave of bitterness surged from the bottom of his heart, suffocating him.
Things that he had grown accustomed to, that were perfectly ordinary, now acted as sharp blades piercing him.
Every flower, every blade of grass here—everything was connected to Norah.
Yet Norah had forgotten all of this and would probably never come back.
Circe stood up, looking at him uneasily and letting out weak whimpers. Even Coco seemed a bit agitated, pacing back and forth.
Xavier sat on the chair, lit a cigarette, his gaze empty. His heart felt completely hollowed out, as regret and longing were infinitely magnified in that emptiness.
...
Jonathan gave her a look and raised an eyebrow. "Not really."
It was just that seeing Norah suffer grievances because of Xavier before made him pretty pissed off.
After the accident, it was emotionally impossible for him not to hold Xavier accountable.
Because of this, Ella had also been down for a few days. He couldn't go settle the score with Xavier, but asking him to ever approve of Xavier and Norah being together again was impossible.
Deep down, he knew Norah's accident was just that—an accident, and had nothing to do with Xavier. Xavier's hesitations were also out of consideration for Norah.
From another perspective, Xavier didn't like Norah that much, so all his reactions were perfectly normal.
However, just as Estelle instinctively favored Xavier, Jonathan's heart ached for Norah.
Estelle wrapped the belt of his bathrobe around her fingers, her voice dropping low. "I always thought Norah was the light in Xavier's life. She was his salvation, the one who would help him get back on his feet."
